Hi all,

I just bought a second hand red Abarth 500. It has the factory esseesse Suspension, remap and Monza exhaust, leather etc. What a snarly, growling little rocket it is! I grin every time I drive it :)

So, my first post and a question, if that is ok:
There is one problem on the car: the factory boost gauge indicator pod is not working right. The previous owner was honest about the gauge having sporadic issues but it was fine on the test drive. When I first got the car (Tuesday), I took a long and windy wet of B roads home, rather than the motorway. I had so much fun that I took it out for another spin after dinner. That's when I noticed the gauge did not illuminate when the lights were on, but the boost needle seemed to be working. Then over the next 2 days, I noticed a couple of occasions where it would rise up on boost, but the needle would fluctuate quite a bit around max boost (engine and turbo behaving perfectly). Today the boost gauge is not working at all. This is the gauge with Sport indicator in the middle and that bit works fine.

I have just bought a pod from a breaker and in my workshop I already have the Ford radio tools and Torx drivers to get the radio and vent out, so I can replace the pod. Is this a common problem and will this be the fix? I ask because I read about a recall to address a loom chafing on the steering column support and I imagine it is possible this could also potentially be the problem.

Can any of you advise please?

    OK. Now fixed.
    For anyone else with Boost Pod wierdness (erratic or failed boost readings, loss of illumination etc), it is likely to be a connection issue. Here is how I fixed mine:

    1. Remove the radio: Take out the 4 blank quadrants from around the circular control buttons (I used my thumbnail but a guitar plectrum or carefully applied small screwdriver will work too), insert a pair of removal tools (available on eBay / Amazon etc,), slide the radio out, and release the clips so you can unplug the connectors on the back of the radio, including the aerial.

    2. Remove the blower vents: there are two silver cross-head screwes, one on each side, above the radio cradle. Remove these (being careful not to drop them) and gently pull the vents out (there are clips at the top that will release as you pull).

    3. Clean the Pod Connection: Follow the wire from under the pod and you will find a white 3-pin connector that joins the pod to the loom. Release this (push-in clip on the Pod side of the plug) and separate the plug/socket. Spray liberally with Electrical Contact Cleaner (eBay of Amazon again) and plug/unplug the connectors a few times to help clean of the pins, then push the connectors together properly and test. If it doesn't work first time, repeat step 3 again.

    That is what worked for me. I didn't even end up fitting the new Pod I bought. So, if it turns out your pod is actually knackered, I have a good one you can have at a reasonable price....  ;)

    It's a known issue, they are very sensitive to battery voltage. There is a software update available from Abarth that sorts the issue.

    mine does this, driving along and needle just does what it wants, and the shift light doesnt work

    Good evening after reading this I have just recently had issues with my boost gauge everything works apart from the needle which doesn't move at all do you reccon it could be a case of doing this too and giving it a good clean ??

    I find turn it off, count to 20 and restart the car. Experienced on S1 and S3. Usually worse on colder weather.

    I was also told battery related, due to everything trying to start at the same time (sensors, starter, audio, power steering...). Each item only has a short period of time to report status or it produces error. Normally it's the boost gauge that plays up but I have had power steering messages pop up. Like, boost gauge, also clear on restart.
