Clarkson: Twingo Renaultsport review
« on: October 26, 2008, 10:14:51 am »
Why is Clarkson's review of the Twingo Renaultsport 133 relevant to us?

Because he ends up deciding a 500 Abarth is better...

Can't say I take a huge amount of stock in his reviews to be honest, I'll wait for the EVO or Performance Car double test, both on UK roads. Oh, and perhaps drive both myself.

I'm a big fan of the Twingo 133, at least on paper, and its great that we have such choice in affordable performance hot hatchery. Personally, and why I'm here obviously, is that my money is on the 500, its better looking, has a fantastic interior and that engine is a peach.

My reservations on the Twingo are about some aspects of its looks, not so keen on the back end but I like the front. The interior could be better, but they only have the base car to go on so I can forgive that. Not so hot on the tack on wheel arches, but again its not the worst thing in the world. I like the price and I like the good reviews its getting, EVO, Drivers Republic and Performance Car have all said good things.

Had a test drive of a RenaultSport Twingo 133 today.
    Metallic blue and Cup suspension.

    Liked:
Very good handling...very little roll and accurate steering. It felt light and reactive.
Engine was very responsive and fairly smooth across the whole rev range. In gear acc was ok once rpm's were higher.
    Seats were comfy and supportive.
Looks very good in the flesh (but smaller than I imagined compared with pictures)

    Disliked:
Very, very firm ride. I thought my Type-R was hard but this was the firmest I've ever driven.
The engine didn't rev as quickly as I hoped (maybe because it had only done 10 miles)
    It didnt feel particularly quick.
Gear change had a short throw but felt rubbery and vague.
    Steering wheel seemed too big.
Initial brake travel was way too sharp.
It was hard to read both Speed and RPM in an instant. The rev counter was too small and the speedo was far away!
    Looked very cheap inside.
Too Small! The 500 seemed to have more space inside.

I read on the Renault Sport site that the Twingo RS will be featured on the new Top Gear series, and as it appears Clarkson has driven the 500 Abarth, hopefully theres the potential they'll be putting them up against each other.

From my experience of Renault, he was lucky to get it started  ;D

Before my disastrous Barchetta. my previous 4 new cars were Renaults - from a 5 , two Clios and a Laguna. All of them were totally reliable, good to drive for their own sector and I never once regretted buying them. I wanted a Clio 255 V6 in ID yellow but it was just too impractical as a day to day car. So I bought the Barchetta. Was that ever a mistake!

While the Barchetta was at the dealer having clutch number 4 fitted, I was offered a good trade-in price and bought the AGP. Otherwise I wouldn't be here now.

My wife is in the market for a new car so we went to look at the Twingo RS. We didn't drive it, we just thought how cheap it looked. Most of the time she wouldn't use the performance and would just sit in it on the motorway. Not a particularly nice place to be. There was a Clio Cup in white with the gloss black wheels. Compared with the AGP that was cheap inside as well. Apart from the Recaros, that is. Again the performance would only be used for a small percentage of the time.

I wasn't just mindlessly bashing other manufacturers, so sorry if I gave that impression. I was speaking as a past manager of a large car supermarket. Since Renault changed the shape of the Laguna, I think it was 2002, they were the most problematic make of car that we supplied. It came to the stage in late 05, I refused to stock Renault because of the high come back rate.

I would of considered the Twingo RS for my next car but I could not live with the interior, really dated and plasticy look.

Do like the Renault Sport range generally though.

my dad bought one, a 52 plate laguna 1.9 diesel estate, i told him not to but he got taken in by the cream leather, sat nav, keyless entry etc.

6 months and £1000 later with the car still not fixed, (a turbo problem), he cut his losses and traded it in against a volvo. he still reads the renault forums now and still tells me theyre having major problems with them.

to be fair its like any manufacturer, people have good and bad experiences with them all, but renault is certainly one of the manufacturers i encourage anyone i like to avoid!

I could live with the interior, its a bit bland and dull, but if its as good to drive as they say I wouldn't worry so much. I think Renault build quality is pretty decent now, certainly I'd say its on a par with modern VW's, which have an somewhat undeserved reputation for bomb proof quality, which it most certainly is not on all models.

I recently, well earlier this year, had occasion to drive an old Megane 225 Cup press car, it was leggy, well abused and a bit tatty in places, but as you'd expect for a 4 year old car and certainly in a similar state to my much loved Lupo GTI. To drive it felt fresh and although worn in still handled crisply and cleanly, I was shocked by just how good a steer it was.

You can probably tell (although I am toning it down a little) I'm a huge fan of RenaultSports efforts, I've come very close to buying a 197 and the more recent Cup version, as I've been so impressed with them, so I'm very excited about the Twingo. I've actually been attempting to convince my other half to chuck in the 100HP for one but she refuses. :)

BTW, the problems with the last shape Laguna are well known, a bit of a turkey of a car!
