Slipping out of gear
« on: July 03, 2023, 03:43:47 pm »
Hi all

I have a semi auto abarth 2012 and have been having issues with it slipping out of gear into neutral. When the engine is turned off and on it’s fine. I have also been noticing quite sudden gear down shifts and revs are a bit high which sounds like low transmission oil. I’ve tried to locate the fluid level but can’t see how to get at it to check  - I’m assuming it’s below the battery but finding it is difficult. I’ve had a look here and can’t see anything..any specific advice for checking it would be great

Thanks
Stephen

Be aware the system will return to neutral if a door is left open.

There are 2 separate gear oils on your car, one is the MTA system and one for the gearbox. Both require keeping topped up.

Sounds like the MTA system may need a reset.

Ok thanks - when you say mta needs a reset can you elaborate please?

Also when you say two oils assume this is one for the hydraulic (MTA) and one for the gearbox itself? but how are they accessed?

    Thanks

Just as a further follow up checking underneath I wasn’t experiencing any leaks but around the gearbox is a little bit wet. Could it be that the hydraulic fluid is maybe leaking from somewhere? Slave cylinder?

You can access the gearbox and clutch operation via MES software and leads here https://www.gendan.co.uk/product_FESPKG.html

You can also download the software free but has limited use and make up your own leads.

Its a really useful tool and highly recommended.

Yes you are correct. There is a white plastic reservoir above the gearbox for the hydraulic operation. You'll also see a black sphere that holds system pressure.

Drain plug and level plug on bottom of gearbox to renew/check gearbox oil.

Still think a door maybe ajar so check interior light switch on door jams.

Just an update. I removed the battery tray and then the heatshield which is covering the bottle. It was quite full but topped it up to be sure. On a test drive it does feel a bit smoother on the auto gear change. I am though wondering if the gearbox oil might need to be change. Car is at near 50k and whilst it has had service history I don’t think transmission fluid changes would be part of it. Also heard it doesn’t need it all? Doesn’t sound right to me but could be wrong…
