flat battery woe
« on: April 20, 2020, 09:45:29 am »
After several weeks of coronavirus related lockdown my Abarth 500s battery is flat :(

We're gonna put the charger on it this evening but I just wanted to make sure of the correct procedure.

Flicking through the manual it says to disconnect the negative terminal and charge but I've never heard of only connecting the charger to the negative terminal. In that case where would the positive clip of the charger attach to? Or do I connect the battery to the charger in the traditional way (positive to positive/negative to negative) and is the manual is just stating the correct order to do it?

Having a bit of a dumb moment (sorry!) but don't want to blow my car up!

Thanks!

    Just to clarify.

First disconnect the battery from the car, then connect red lead of charger to + pos battery terminal and black to - neg of battery.

The reason is to isolate the battery charger from the electronics of the car.  Same as removing the battery from the car to recharge. :thumb:

    Hope that helps..

When you jump start, you connect the red to the positive and then the black cable to earth, which is  bare bodywork, a bit of suspension.

Charging, you may well have to disconnect the battery, I'm no expert!

    What about a trickle charger?

It'll keep the battery in condition during lockdown

Yeah, thanks. Should be all sorted (charging it now).

Just needs more use (poor thing!) but a trickle charger is also good idea . :thumb:
