Title: Konis, SS and 595- thoroughly confused. Would appreciate advice
Post by: -K1- on January 27, 2014, 10:15:18 pm
Hi I am looking at getting into another Fiat after having totally enjoyed my uni years in a tuned 124 sport. We have just moved to Europe (currently Frankfurt and then on to Cote d Azur) and have a S max which works for lugging extended family and luggage around but is a bit big. We thought of an A500 as size is great, we enjoyed a little a 500 that was a business car that we drove a few times and I have been hearing great things about the fun to drive aspect which is my big beef about modern performance cars these days. Pre GFC I had some tasty Porsches - 997TT, Cayman S etc and have driven a few serious other cars like 458 Italia but found them to be no fun unless you drive it like you nicked it. Abarth seems perfect for lower speed thrills

Question is how to spec. Finances have seen better days so not looking to spend too much and get this last my wife. I am confused about suspension. I don't like a really sharp hard ride and have read all the usual reviews which say the SS has a poor ride and that the 595 has a good one. Note comments on bump stops which I will do but what to use as a base? I read that the 595 has a much improved ride and that the SS is harsh but looking at the new spec it looks like SS and 595 have the same FSD Konis so why does one ride much worse? Seems like the best thing to do might be just get the standard car on 16s or get the SS if the Konis are now the same as in the 595 but can't tell if that will give a nice ride as all reviews say otherwise!

Confused.

Hi there,

I settled on a 500 esseesse.
The reasons for this are....its an esseesse!!!

I too have had lots of great cars, Lotus', Ferrari 355, BMW M3, Integrale...list is long but the 500 is by far the most fun I've ever had in a daily car.
Now, the suspension is quite hard, but no harder than the Ferrari or the M3. I also had a 500 1.4 sport. The suspension on that was quite hard too.
Best thing to do is test drive some and make your own mind up.

One thing is certain though and that is that once bitten, you WILL buy one, whichever model it may be. 500, 595 or 695.  :thumb:

Cheers for that. I think it's going to be a fun little car. Fun is not always fastest.
Better question. Are the shocks in the SS, the optional Konis and the 595 the same? Is the only difference the springs?

Having driven a 595 Competizione, abet up the Goodwood hill course, it was definitely more pleasant than my A500C SS.
What the difference is, I don't know, as I believe they have the same components.

Ohhhhh No!!!

Abarth offer Koni upgrade kits at a price, the esseesse has lower springs than the standard A500, but as far as I know, the shocks are the same as standard (but they're not made by Koni).

Judging by feedback on here, I'm not sure how worthwhile the upgrade kits are though. They still knock apparently (although mine don't)
I'm sure someone more knowledgeable can confirm this or correct me.

I don't know what dampers are fitted to the 595 and what geometry changes they must have made to improve the suspension.  ???

Just go for a few test drives. Your impressions will certainly differ from mine and other peoples. Whichever one you choose it will make you grin.
Guaranteed  ;D ;D ;D

In terms of suspension changes to standard Abarth 500 NP (normal production):
- basic Esseesse kit → only lowering springs (-20 mm) + standard shocks
- Esseesse Koni kit and 595 versions → both have the same lowering springs (-20 mm) + the same Koni FSD shock absorbers

I had Esseesse Koni kit fitted more than a month ago - and the ride comparing to standard 500 NP suspension is like night and day as you may also read in other similar threads. Also hard braking from high speeds is much more stable without this "light back" feeling.  At the same time I also fitted shorter bump stops.

Earlier before I test driven Abarth 500 which had basic Esseesse kit fitted and for me the ride harshness was unacceptable.

Gregi
Thanks that is great info. Next question is when did the Koni FSD become included in the Esseesse kit or become available so I can check used cars?

Interesting to note used prices in Europe at dealers aren't that much less than new. Perhaps a topic for a new thread.

Since very beginning there were two Esseesse kits in offer: with and without Koni FSD shocks. The best way will be to ask the owner / check by yourself / check in warranty booklet in the section: "WARRANTY ON KIT ELABORAZIONE ABARTH" :)

Abarth 500 holds its value pretty well.

With the help of members like Lloyd here and on other forums, I've done quite a bit of research on dampers; springs; bumps stops; and bushes in order to gather parts for an update.  I just need a few more bits then I'll get it all sorted.

The 595 springs aren't the same part no. as earlier SS (pre 595) kits.  595 springs are revised with different part numbers and are partly likely to account for the improved ride.  I'm hoping to find out if the springs in the current (I.e post 595) SS/Koni Kits are the same as 595.  Logic says they should but this is Abarth

The FSD damper part numbers also vary but I think that was more aimed at resolving knocking issues - but could be wrong.  One thing I will say about knocking is that, as with most things, you'll only really hear from those having problems.

Similar story with A500c/A595c.  When you add in the 695 models it's even more confusing!
