Clicky noise on idle from the outside.
« on: January 18, 2014, 04:40:05 pm »
When I bought her she had a clicking noise sounded like from the engine bay.THis later disappeared for ages and then it returned.THen I didn't hear it about two years but yesterday...it came back.
hArd to explain but it sounds like a clicking noise and when you rev it the click gets faster.
Anybody had this before?
Now with added monza fun :P

Tappets? They say a tappy engine is a happy engine :)

I'm no mechanic though, so if worried, get it looked at. But most engines do tap, like a clicking that gets faster the higher the RPM.

Wikipedia says it better than me I know that much! ha ha...

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tappet

How many miles are you on? it could need oil top up, valve clearances checked etc.

9800 miles bud.she does tend to stay in the garage most of the time so she's standing a lot.
Oil seems fine.shes going in for a service but in march or April so il mention it then but I'm sure itl go way before then so nobody will be able to listen..typical.

I'm sure it's fine too, but just mention it :) I would worry more if it's permanent.

Out of interest how hard do you drive your car?

I dont get to use mine too often these days.. last year i only did 1800 miles but mine is quite tappety when its not been started for a while, then calms down when its up to temp..  If you also have your AC on there is a loud relay that roams the tickover.. this is normal too its the thermostat on the AC kicking in..

Sorry if this is boring but I'll try to explain why.....

They call them tappets and an engine that makes this type of noise is called 'tappety'!

On modern engines they are actually hydraulic cam followers, not tappets, but the name has stuck.

In the old days a garage would adjust the clearance between the camshaft and the tappets using feeler gauges every 6-12000 miles. This was costly and time consuming.
Then someone invented cam followers. These were cheaper to produce, had a positive effect on power efficiency but were harder to adjust and only really seen on performance engines.
Then some clever person invented hydraulic cam followers. They never need adjusting and assuming you change the oil regularly, never go wrong (theory!)
Sometimes though, the hydraulic bit gets a little blockage or something happens (low oil pressure, stick when cold etc etc) and this causes your 'tappety' noise.

Nothing to worry about unless it's very loud or you don't check or change your oil regularly!

    Hope this helps.

Sometimes mine does it too by the way! ???

Thanks for the very useful replies guys :thumb:. The car is garaged but I don't think it's too cold in there.I will check the oil again tomorrow.I ain't checked it since my last long journey. Its never been low on oil though to be honest but I will double check:) it's also good to hear it isn't just mine lol.

Iv been getting this weird clicking/ knocking sound. Can only hear it when it's ticking over.  And the last time I heard it was about a month ago and just today it started again. It's not all the time but it sounds weird. Iv recorded it on my phone. I have read that something about a ecu upgrade/ remap for abarths bought before 2012 (mines a 2010) to stop this?  It's deffo not the tappits coz I know what they sound like.
