Rear Axle
« on: March 03, 2021, 04:05:00 pm »
Hi everyone,

I'm hoping some of you will be able to help me - the rear axle on my 2012 Abarth 500 needs replacing due to corrosion. I have a trustworthy garage who is willing to do the replacement but has asked me to source the part myself (and now I can see why) as it's proving difficult to find the right part that I'm sure will fit.

I have found two so far, would any of you be able to tell me if they are ok for my car? I think the best bet is the ebay one, although it is used. Not sure about the imaxle one as it states Fiat 500 and I don't know what parts are interchangeable between Fiat and Abarth.

I've been quoted for an original part from an Abarth dealer (griffin mill) at £1200, which is out of the question as I simply cannot afford it. Hence the parts I have found which are a lot cheaper and I'm aware the ebay one is used. If neither of the below will work, would you be able to show me a site where I could get one at a decent price? Many thanks in advance, I've been stressing over this for far too long today!

Imaxle version (new)

(Ebay version used - but I think is acceptable and will fit? The seller said it would, but I'd prefer one of you guys with knowledge to confirm if possible.)

Don’t forget to search on eBay for cars advertised as “breaking”

You may find one with front end damage and you can get the rear axle for a good price

Thank you, do you have any idea about the suitability though for the ebay one I posted? I admit it probably isn't easy from just a picture!

I can’t answer with 100% confidence so would rather not at all I’m afraid!

I know the regular 500 can have drum or disc rear brakes, so would have to make sure it’s disc.
I have just checked and according to power flex and various other companies, the rear beam axle bush uses the same part for Fiat 500 and Abarth (both are listed as replacing the same OE part number)

I personally think they would be the same, I would certainly fit new, good quality rear beam bushes and replace wheel bearings whilst the job is being done too.

Sorry I can’t help any more than that, maybe the site sponsor Glyn Hopkins would be able to advise if the part is the same? If your not buying OEM regardless, they have no reason to not help.

As  Matt_dab said, I think the only important criteria is "is it for drums or discs." The IM axles version is apparently stronger with more metal for the tin worms to eat so whichever version you go for give it a good coating of Dinitrol or similar and hopefully it will not re-occur. Just remember every spring to jetwash it underneath then respray the anti rust treatment. No affiliation but here :- https://www.dinitroldirect.com
