Rear Axle/Subframe Bushes replacement?
« on: December 07, 2020, 09:27:01 pm »
Hi.

My Abarth 500 2009 Sways around at the rear when hitting any bump at higher speeds.  I’m pretty sure it’s the rear axle/subframe bushes.

Has anyone attempted to change the rear axle/subframe bushes.   What is involved,  can it be done with axle left in place or does the whole axle need to be removed?

Thanks for all you help in advance.

I haven't carried it out on a 500, but have on other vehicles with a similar construction. the beam will ideally be removed as you'll need to press/cut/burn out the old bushes usually then press new ones in. If it were me, and either paying a garage to do this or spending the time to have this done I'd fit Powerflex polyurethane bushes. Not only are these a bit stiffer alternative than the standard rubber bushes, which should give you a handling increase, but they will not perish and degrade like rubber, so should last the lifetime of the car. They are generally easier to fit as well.

Thanks Chino,  I done exactly that :).

I picked up the power flex bushes from Amazon for £35.00 delivered bargain.  They did take a few days though,  came from Italy for some odd reason.  Isn’t power flex based in England.

I managed to do them by leaving everything in place and just by unclipping the brake lines to give some slack when moving the axle down.  There was plenty of slack,  just made sure I got all the plastic clips out.  You have to release the top shock bolt and brake hose metal clip.  Keep everything supported with axle stands and a trolley jack.
The original bushes are plastic and not steel.  Used a bush removal tool and it came out pretty easy.
Just thought I add that so it may help someone else tackling this task.
