Some Advice on the MTA
« on: June 16, 2013, 07:50:37 pm »
Evening all,

Was looking for some advice from members and guys & girls who have the MTA gearbox.

The Gaffer (wife) can only drive auto cars and currently has a 12 plate smart 4- 2.

She is looking to change her car in the next few months; been driving only a year but has realised since we have moved house that the smart is not a good car for 60mph country roads.

She wants an Abarth with the auto / paddle box.

So was wondering if peeps could answer a few questions for me?

1 - Can someone shed some light on how the gearbox is in town traffic and how is it in general?  - have looked at some reviews that say it is very jerky, but other reviews say its fine - but the smart isnt exactly smooth.

2 - Was there updates (software) to the gearbox since it first came out? Have also read that the 595 is smoother...?

3 - Any other advice about which version she should be looking at? obviously she wants the most expensive one... but from previous car experience, the most expensive doesn't mean its the best..

Thanks everyone!

Andy

I have not actually had my 595c delivered yet. However, from the many test drives I have had, I report as below.

My current car is a M3 SMG and that is a little jerky round town. The box in the 595 has been altered from the 500 and has a new software which means quicker changes and not less jerky. If driven properly the box is fine. By properly I mean that you have to judge the gear change when in auto mode and feather the accelerator pedal slightly. You don't have to lift off completely but just come up a millimetre of two. In flappy paddle mode you can up shift and down shift like you would in a normal car without adjusting the accelerator pedal.

So to answer your question town driving is great in auto and then the BOSS can change to flappy Paddle if she wishes when you get out of town.

The reason that so many people can't get on with the MTA is that they think it is full auto and it is not.

    Hope that helps.

    QaWelcome

1 - 6 out of 10 of the cars I've had are Italian, don't ever believe the reviews - often biased, uneducated ramblings copied from each other.  I'm on my 2nd car with this type of box.  The box can be jerky but after time you can make it smooth as mentioned.  It's better than a Smart.  It's also more obedient to driver override in auto mode than a VAG DSG box ('I know best attitude').

2 - Gearbox updates have been mentioned, but I've found no evidence of this and I think engine performance is more of a factor than gearbox software.  Coincidently some sources mentioned an update for cars with the SS kit was fitted - again I'm not fully convinced.  I think it's setup to change gear based on torque output.  The jerkiness is a combo of gear ratio, and difference in engine torque output between gears.  I've come to the conclusion that the box is best suited to SS/595 or a remapped car with higher outputs and a different torque curve based on forum feedback. When I had the TMC box fitted to my A500c SS, gear change was even smoother, supporting my thinking that its less to do with gearbox software, and more to do with the output characteristics of the engine.  The 595 may be smoother as it has an updated map, and I think, a flatter torque curve than SS.

3 - If you want the MTA, best to go for SS/595 (or 695 as Lloyd mentioned), or consider a remap after purchase for smoother changes.  Turismo and Competizione have a firmer ride, Comp has a louder Monza exhaust and skinny Sabelts that need a Sabelt arse to fit.

Hi, did you ever get a MTA? If so which one and how did you get on with it?
I have one on order (595 Competizione) really looking forward to it but confused regarding all the conflicting opinions on the jerky gear box.

Learning how to use the gearbox is key, auto in town and anticipate upshift, I’m on my 2nd Abarth the 1st was a manual, due to disability the 2nd was an MTA wouldn’t go back to a manual. As stated in other replies ignore the bury the foot in the carpet car reviews.

The kids are driving my wifes 'old' 695C Edizione Maserati with an MTA. It's not an automatic and not a dual clutch. IMO driving it in 'auto' mode is useless. Use the paddles and it suits the car, but it's not a traffic light racer despite the standard 180 bhp :-)
