Wiper blade issue
« on: September 15, 2013, 05:44:34 pm »
Seem to have a problem with the drivers side wiper blade sticking/juddering across the screen. Not the arm which seems fine, definitely the blade, problem mostly at end nearest bonnet.

No obvious split in it but does seem a little close at the other end to the passenger side one when moving. Maybe needs adjustment? Passenger side is fine :-/

Obviously don't want it breaking in this awful weather while driving!!

Any ideas?

    Hi!

Usual problem with any wiper blades, especially if you have warm/hot air directed at the screen for any length of time. Try deselecting screen vents and it should minimise the problem. The screen can get really hot locally to where the wiper blades sit!

Another ploy is to twist the wiper arm to make the blade sweep better, this is more difficult and don't twist it too far (use a pair of small adjustable spanners spread out along the arm to twist one way or the other!).

Good luck, I hate noisy wipers too.

Looks like this is a fairly common and unpleasant issue with the 500

Have spent a little time googling and it seems swapping them for a set of Bosch Aerotwin A300S cures the issue.

It's simply crap quality ones from Fiat fitted as standard that can cause them to collide and judder - which can't be good in the long run can it?

Finding lots of niggles with this car after a week of ownership :(

It's a basic design flaw :thumbd: one blade is twice the size of the other so has twice resistance of the smaller one, if they both have an equal amount of force applied upon them they simply won't move at the same speed  :-\

Even with Bosch Aerotwin I have the problem.

Solution is regular and proper cleaning of the screen and blades.  Intensive tar remover works well on the glass and wipers, remember to wash it off.  Rain X also helps but doesn't last long.

Sounds like a job for Gtechniq G5 glass sealant.  ;)

At anything about 30mph or over there is simply no need for wipers - even chucking it down.

I haven't used wipers for years, and it rains more than occasionally up here lol  ::)

I tried the sealant idea my wiper went worse as wobbling and making a rather annoying squeak after 3 weeks have to use mine as I always wake up to bird crap all over it everyday

Yeah, that's the sealant's only downside... if you have it applied, you should never use the wipers as any judder is made worse, however if you're lucky enough to live in an area where there's not a lot of bird crap and you can keep your car garaged, the sealant is excellent.

Not sure if this will work, but for a clearer screen and better wiping it's something I always do...

    1. Clean your windscreen with glass cleaner
    2. Clay Bar your windscreen with plenty of lubrication
    3. Wipe your wiper blades down with some glass cleaner to remove any excess dirt on them.

Hope that helps. But if it's a common problem, it won't do anything other than make your glass a lot clearer... not a bad thing though really.

With the constant rain this issue is still worrying me.

Read on another forum that there are dots on the windscreen that indicate where the wipers should sit at rest. I can see the dots and the D/Side wiper sits above them, though not on, as do the P/Side ones.

Anyone know where the actual position the wiper should be at rest in relation to these dots.

The D/Side wiper seems to have some horizontal play in it around the axis of the fitting, meaning sometimes it comes to rest below the P/Side one, and sometimes above - surely it should stay still?

Any help appreciated, just been out to try and adjust the position using the main bolt, but it won't budge and I'm all out of WD40!!

Out of interest have you measured them and checked they are to spec and someone hasn't replaced them with the wrong size wipers? Should be 24" and 14"

I found that RainX made things ten times worse but the Bosch Aerotwins were a big improvement.  :thumb:

Actually I haven't, I assumed they were the factory jobs ...

    *measures*

Nope, they are the right size.

    UPDATE:

Bought a set of Aerotwins yesterday and seems to have cured the issue completely AND actually wipes the screen instead of smearing it. Blades are still a bit close, but not as much as before, no horrible scraping, juddering or banging the A-Pillar now.

AM24U and AM13U are the individual part numbers, or A300S for the, for some reason more expensive, set.
