Waiting to see cost in Australia. But probably not, will most likely get a Giulia as we need one sensible car.

Will wait until I see it in the metal but for the apparent premium they are going to be asking for over the MX5 I don't think it offers enough.

You'd be able to buy a 5 and turbo it for next level performance.

I like them a lot, I am currently planning to get one but again that price is just the only hurdle at the moment.

The MX-5 is stunning, it won a world design award recently and I can see why, Fiat had some say in it apparently, to what extend I'm not sure but Mazda apparently 'borrowed' the idea for the stitched dash from Fiat's 124 plans at least, lol.

It just depends what Abarth release after they have sold the Launch edition models, a lower spec one with less options? I'm not really sure but It's a great looking car IMO and it just needs a great looking price.

If they came out with a folding hard top like the MX-5 RF next year then I don't think I would be able to resist.

I imagine a tuned version will happen, but probably not before Mazda announce a turbo variant or more powerful variant.

I just can't see Mazda making a faster car than their own MX-5 on the same production line.... doesn't make business sense.
There is talk of them Turbocharging the MX-5 RF in which case I bet a faster 124 will come out around the same time.

If they are planning it (like using the 2.5 Turbo that's coming in the CX-9) they wont admit it yet as to not harm sales. We are only a year into the life of the new MX-5 and they are saying it has a 10 year life span.

Just keep your eyes on what Mazda do I feel it will be a guide as to what Abarth will be doing. I expect a hard top 124 to be announced next year once they have had the soft top out for a year like Mazda have done.

So is the Abarth 124 made and finished on the Mazda assembly line?

I'm not 100% sure if it's finished in Hiroshima with the Abarth trims etc, but I think it is, if it's not that might explain why it's so expensive. Fiat Ships the MultiAir over there so it most likely is all finished over there. Which I think is great news btw, Japanese build quality is superb.

The MX-5 Brembo Recaro edition has the exact same set up as the Abarth 124 with the Bilstein's and Brembo's etc. it really is very closely tied in with the MX-5 at the moment.

Just found this: They say it's shipped out of Japan to Turin, then finished there..... that WOULD explain the price.

That's for the Abarth version though only, not every 124?

Whatever it is it's madness IMHO but only sales will tell.

I would have thought sending a team of Italians in Japan would be cheaper than having the car travel half the globe  ???

I love the look of the car but the performance is pathetic. I think personally, you would have to be stupid to pay what they are asking for one.

It had to have a sub 6s 0-62 to make some sense but 170 bhp and a 6.8s to 62 is laughable.

Indeed for £30k + I wouldn't even look at it. There are so many other cars out there.

It will all come down to how it drives, paper stats can’t tell you everything about a car, Pistonheads just proved that to me with the M4 GTS lap of Combe they have on their site, 500bhp, massive Pilot sport Cup 2 rubber, they show the driver doing ~4 second a lap quicker than what I can do at Combe in my MX5 on road tyres and it looked a handful, like he was trying, too much weight, if I had half that power and sticky tyres I’d smash that, I could probably get close just running the same tyre.

The 124 will have reasonable power for its weights and its chassis balance shouldn’t be underestimated, I’ve not got around to testing my SS up against my Mazda at the same venue but even though the Mazda feels gutless I think the SS would struggle to match the 5 around a technical lap, and it can barely crack 60 in 8s.

all told though if the price is to be that much higher the 124 needs to offer another level of performance to the Mazda not broadly the same, can’t see it doing that without the 1.7 Tbi.

Results from Prescott Hill Climb yesterday pretty much confirm what you have said...

Off the line the 500 is typically quickest to 64ft and passing the first speed trap at a consistently clinical 56mph.  However by halfway its loosing out a second or two with the quickest 500SS being 3.5 secs behind the lead MX5 at the finish.

Obvious different drivers, etc but on comparison of the results they show that whilst the 500 is making up time between the timing points, it is being lost on the more techincal bits.
