Title: Sat Nav
Post by: Coolcarbon on May 31, 2017, 08:47:29 pm
Well we've finally taken delivery of our new Abarth 124 Spider.

Surprised and disappointed that it didn't have the sat nav sim included as standard as Fiat do with their top spec 124..

Anyway, I see there are 'genuine' cards for sale on ebay for the Fiat 124 unit.

I'm guessing these would work in the Abarth unit too?

Yes it is the same card in Spider / Abarth Spider.

Just make sure it's actually a new card, not a used one.

They lock to the vin after 100 miles or so.

65 quid, damn sight cheaper than dealer price.
It arrived today, I popped it in the slot and it works perfectly

Hi, just got an Abarth Spider Scorpione with the 7" screen and no nav. Reading various forums it seems I can get a card off Ebay for £60 that will work, but some say no post code function or UK speed camera warnings. Is that the case?
I'd like the nav, but not just for cosmetic reasons! Anyone help please? Thanks.

The one I purchased definitely has speed camera warnings, not just a horrible bing bong noise either.
The lady actually tells you very politely there is a camera ahead and if you’re going a bit fast she tells you to reduce your speed.
You also have a red and white sign in the display telling you the speed limit.
Can’t say for sure about postcode entry because I have not tried to do it yet.
I’m happy with it at the price.
Hope this helps

I bought a chip from eBay too... postcode works, and if shows me where the camera are (not completely accurate from what I’ve seen so far), but I am not conscious of a verbal warning... I don’t really listen to her anyway, as a combo of the engine purr and bose make for better listening. :)

Interesting. Have emailed two of the suppliers on Ebay asking the same questions and whether or not the card can receive live travel updates, after being stuck on the M6 for three hours, on the way back from picking it up!Neither have so far replied.
The good news was that the car behaved well in nose to tail traffic for three hours, no issues, and then purred off when we finally got past a bad accident and recorded  39 mpg on the readout for the 150 mile trip.

There seems to be a little known promotion currently running for free satnav on Spiders registered between 1 September and 31 December 2017. I spoke to a guy on the Abarth customer services number and he has organised a free, genuine SD card for me. Saves me the hassle of trying to find a card on EBay and also saves nearly £500.
I would suggest that more people try getting a freebie.

Thanks themro for the info. Rang Abarth customer care this morning , who confirmed the promotion, and asked me to ring the supplying dealer. They told me my Scorpione model did not qualify, despite being registered last week. I have asked why  and if there are any other exclusions from the offer.
Glad you got the offer, does the card get live travel updates?

I'd be curious to hear their response too, I'll be picking up my Scorpione within the next week hopefully.

Did either of the eBay suppliers get back to you? Also wondering if anyone else in this thread owns a Scorpione or are they all 'full-fat' Abarths?
Title: Re: Sat Nav
Post by: rvrover on November 17, 2017, 11:00:03 am
The dealer tells me the Scorpione models are excluded by Abarth because it is "already a strong deal". So the choice is plug in my phone, and get maps, live updates , etc for free or pay anything from £60 upwards to buy the SD card that will put maps on the 7" screen.
Easier to read, etc, but no-one can confirm to date if it offers full functionality, particularly live traffic updates. The ebay sellers have not responded to the question.
No rush, I usually know where I'm going!

Apologies for the delay in replying. To be honest, I can't tell you what the card covers as I have not yet picked it up from the dealership. As soon as I have it and plugged it in then I'll update the thread.
Interesting that the dealership says your model is not included. I would go back to Abarth customer services to get that confirmed as the dealership I got my Spider from were not even aware of the promotion! Try having a live chat with them if it is easier.
Also, the guy at Abarth CS dealt with all of this for me rather than telling me to speak direct to the dealership. Make sure you get a case number from them as this has to be followed up and can be dealt with in two ways. If it becomes a complaint then obviously the dealership gets penalised.
FYI I have a full-fat Spider and not the Scorpione.
Good luck!

Hey Guys...
I got mine before September (full fat abarth) so wouldn't have got that, I bought a card on ebay... I get full Sat Nav functionality - points of interest, postcode search (oddly hidden in the enter town box) etc and I 'think' also RDS traffic, maps can be updated via a PC too. but I don't get live traffic updates - the option is grayed out. From reading around I think that only works in the states on cars with the little boot lid Fin for sirrrus? but not 100% sure...

The Sat nav is pretty good to be fair, the directions are clear and I like the announcements in the head rest speaker...Also there isn't a really good spot to mount your phone other than one of those horrid windscreen suckers! I generally check traffic before hand on WAZE for longer journeys and then use the in car nav when driving.

Heard that the US shark fin antenna is  for Sirius XM and the GPS reception is built into the head unit on the infotainment module. Once you get the maps it should be activated.
The 124 infotainment  website  lists historical traffic patterns as part of the functionality, but also says you can add "connected services" for info on  cheap fuel, live traffic and weather updates.

Post by: rvrover on November 23, 2017, 10:51:20 am
Connected Services is a subscription based add on that provides live traffic, etc.
It can be downloaded via the Fiat Toolbox. Explains the lack of traffic updates on the sat nav cards purchased after-market.
Anyone using the system and can comment on performance?

I works fine. You have to make your handy to a hotspot and access this hotspot from the radio.
You can test the traffic (wheather etc.) for one or two month. After that you have to pay aprox. 50 Euro per year. I use it an d i like it.

Ah, thats how it works... thanks snoopy/ Rvrover... will try this and report back...
fiatprofessional-talento.naviextras.com register here and then hook up SD card to PC to enable.

I did think it was odd - as I have other 'live' features inc weather, Fuel prices, speed cameras, speed limits, POI's etc but don't have the live traffic, which would be useful.

Sat nav is pretty good to be honest, a cut above other integrated systems i've had - I the like speed limit alerts (london, grrr)and the graphics are very clear.

I'm picking my Scorpione up on Thursday and have ordered one of the SD cards from eBay for £65, I'll feed back at some point over the weekend once I've had the chance to test the sat nav out a few times.

I'm curious to see if the lower spec Abarth has any differences over the proper spec one.

The Scorpione doesn't have heated seats, microfibre  instead of leather, and they have deleted the Bose speakers and sub-woofer.
Title: Re: Sat Nav
Post by: rvrover on November 27, 2017, 10:51:27 pm
Oh, forgot, and no Brembo brakes.
Title: Re: Sat Nav
Post by: flozgk on November 28, 2017, 02:05:08 pm
I don't think the normal abarth has bose? (mine doesn't) its a fairly punchy option about £800 from memory?
standard stereo is similar except no sub and no speakers in passenger headrest, drivers headrest also only gets 2 speakers not 4.

Scorpione also not available with metallic paint or heritage options. (automatic version also unavailable, having driven it that is not a bad thing IMO).

The brakes and the enormous wait for a Scorpione to be built dissuaded me in the end...

Just thought I'd come back and confirm for anyone considering one of the eBay cards/reading this thread in the future that my £65 SD card works perfectly fine in my Scorpione.

Can't post the eBay link but the seller is 'oneshopnavi'.

Hello. Could someone clarify - if you order satellite navigation for a uk 124 spider, you still have to just around for an SD card? Or is this something which is needed to add functionality to a non-sat Mac spec?
Many thanks

If you go to the nav screen you just get a simple compass.
You need to buy an sd card with the maps on as the car does not come with it.
It’s a dealer option for which you are charged around £300.
You can find them on eBay for a lot less though.
Hope this clarifies it for you.

Ok. Got my free SD card and does pretty much what you would expect. Not used all the functionality yet but come the warmer weather then it will be used with a vengeance.
To all those people struggling to get the free card I would say keep persevering. My dealer also knew nothing about it until Abarth Customer Services got in touch with them directly and sent them the bulletin and claim paperwork.
Personally, I prefer to have the genuine card from the dealer rather than risking an EBay special.
Good luck and Merry Xmas  :thumb:

I'll second that and thanks to themro for highlighting it in the first place. At first my dealer said my car did not qualify, but Abarth came up trumps and the card is on its way.
The promotion was featured on the Abarth website and was for stock cars sold between Oct-Dec, but seems some dealers were unaware.

A little update on this, I wanted to check my (cheap eBay) sd card was up to date.
So I go to the website and download a bit of software to my laptop, plug in the sd card and sure enough there it is with the chassis number.
Downloaded all updates, installed them (getting on an hour) for free and also gave me something like a years worth of free updates.

Spoke to Naviextras people and they say Mac is not supported despite them offering a download of their software for Mac.
I am having HUGE difficulties getting my SD card to do the normal update.  Abarth customer services aware but as yet can't help.  :(

Successfully downloaded the map update tool and updated my maps to 2019 (!!!!)

How do we know when new map updates are available without taking the SD card out of the car?

Apparently HERE maps are updated every 3 months for Android so how come Fiat/Abarth updates are so sparse?

I bought one off eBay and it has speed cameras, postcode entry (although a little fiddly to enter first time), but NO traffic updates as far as I can tell. Hope this helps. A
