According to Phil Ward in today's AutoItalia, the gearbox in the automatic Abarth 124 is a "full-auto slushbox with paddles" and not the TCT option.

When I drove the 'auto' version at Goodwood I was very disappointed in the performance as I, assumed, the gearbox to be the TCT version.

If it is indeed the extremely outdated and very inefficient fluid torque converter type, then I'm not surprised the car felt like a Folivora. ;D

    This is true. I do have the auto as I am so over manual gear changes, but compared to my previous two Clios  and the current “other car in the household” SEAT dual clutch types it is very old school. It somewhat fits with the classic 70s retro feel of the long bonnet swinging away through the windscreen and I get on with it fine just because I don’t crave the stick shift life. You can use the paddles and the lever in “M” mode and when you hit the sports button it makes very decent progress. I have got used to it and although I would have preferred something more up to date it’s not a show stopper for me. The lazy attitude still sometimes suits when you use the car daily for all sorts of commuting journeys.

    Late reply as I've only just joined the forum!

    I take delivery of an auto' this week and went for this option for a few reasons. My Fiat 124 Lusso Plus I felt lacked torque below 2200rpm when the turbo starts to spool up and it 'bogged down' necessitating first gear more often than I expected in slow trickling traffic.

    The Abarth has a lot more power but negligible increase in torque so that is the main reason.

    I also just prefer auto's, my company cars are all auto's. Finally my wife is getting a dodgy left knee so will be able to drive this more if she wants (she can drive a manual still but prefers not to).

    The test drive I had with it in sport mode and using the flappy paddles seemed fine for me for those times of a spirited drive...... :o
