Abarth 124 Spider EML light
« on: July 08, 2021, 10:43:05 am »
Hi everyone, first post on here so here goes....

Bought my 2018 Abarth Spider in May so not had it long. It's only done just over 10k miles when I collected it so barely run in really. However, within a coupe of weeks EML light came one!! Took it to local Abarth dealer (not dealer I bought it from) and they discovered that an oil breather hose was loose in the engine bay and that this was the likely cause of the EML light however they didn't connect to diagnostic machine to confirm this. I think they would rather that the selling dealer rectify the breather hose issue before they start working on the cause of the EML light.

Anyway, long story short, selling dealer fixed breather hose, cleared fault codes and all was well for a few weeks before the EML light reappears! Again, took it to local Abarth dealer and they found the P0420 fault code!! As you guys know, this is related to the CAT but my logic is that surely the CAT is fine on a car that only has 10k miles on it. Garage checked CAT and found no leaks, and there were also no leaks in the exhaust and the oil was fine etc so they cleared the code and literally the next day the EML light came back!!

Does anyone have any clues as to what it might be or have any experience of this issue?? I'm running it on super unleaded if that makes any differance to your advice. Oh, and it's an auto version....

Any help greatfully welcomed.

Welcome to the forum Hornblower28

Have a look here at possible faults
    https://www.abarthforum.co.uk/500-abarth/fault-code-p0420/

    Maybe helpful...

I think a trip back to the selling dealer or if you have an Abarth backed warranty extension then your nearest Abarth dealer.

    Hi 124Abarthreplica

Thanks for the link, I actually read it the other day and it gave the idea to put some CATACLEAN in the tank.

I also have it booked in at local Abarth dealer as it is under the Abarth backed used warranty and they said that they will diagnose/replace lambda sensors.

I guess the mian reason for my post was to find out if replacing the lambdas would work as I don't really want to go back and forth from the garage with them trialling and fixing various things. I would like it fixed straight away if possible.

Also, would I be right in thinking that the CAT itself would unlikely be the problem given the low mileage?

Sending the car to an Abarth dealer under warranty is the right thing to do as they can use 'Examiner' to verify a fix.

As you have read, your fault code opens up a myriad of possibilities.

The lambda's not only check and adjust fuelling but check the 'cat' is working.

So a lambda off kilter does not mean the cat is faulty

As to a cat being faulty, anything is possible. They are very delicate, a bang from a speed bump could be enough.

The dealer said that the CAT was fine as they checked it fir leaks etc. They also said the exhaust was fine and they checked the oil, too.

It's booked in on the 19th so I guess I'll know more then.

    Thanks for your help.
