Air box snorkel

So, after seeing a few videos and a few posts of people taking out the air box snorkel, before I take mine out I was curious, what does this actually do?! Obviously It's put in there for a reason and if car manufactures can get away with adding as little pieces as possible to keep prices down, I'm sure they would!

This leads me to think that it is there for a valid reason! Any info would be appreciated.

Thanks

If i had to guess (and I hate guessing) It probably is to make the car a little quieter?

If you want the car to make more noise and for maaad chatter, take the top off the air-box pull out the old filter and whip a cone filter on the end of the intake.

I did try a cone on it at one point but the intake noise was too loud for me. The chatter was awesome though!

I have a BMC panel filter now and I was considering removing the snorkel.

I'm guessing the snorkel will direct the air from the filter better than it not being there, but if removed it's hardly going to do much harm.

I took the snorkle off for a couple of weeks and it made the car noisy on the motorway. The Punto snorkle was originally designed to finish at a cut out just bellow the bonnet striker panel which you can still see. The snorkle on the Evo finishes behind the o/s headlight which seems stupid and looks like an after thought.
