Both need to be declared, wouldn't want them running the risk of voiding your insurance in the event of a accident :thumbd:

Most specialist insurers would class it as "modified induction" and charge a small sum.  The big comparison sites won't have an option for "drilled holes in airbox" so you'll probably have problems with that one.

I'm not sure just the panel filter would have to be declared as it is a direct replacement and officially does not give any advantages apart from its ability to be reused. Possibly an induction kit or more would have to be declared. Plus, what if you bought a standard used A500 & it already had a BMC filter in, how are you supposed to know? :-)

Deniability doesn't cut it with insurers I'm afraid :(

As for the panel filter, they most definitely do need to be declared and they do make a difference, if only the slightest bit.

Next time you get a quote click the "Modifications" option and you'll likely see multiple options under induction "Panel Filter" will almost certainly be listed.

As is the latest trend of insurers asking what factory fit options you have - they're not modifications by you but do affect the cars value and sometimes the associated risk that comes with it.

It is a modification, and trust me in the event of an accident if found, it will void a  claim, playing the " I didn't know card" won't help.

Now there's no need to be a pedant..

There was a bit of case law a few years back, a guy had an accident in his BMW.  He had non-runflat tyres fitted.
His insurance company refused to pay out as the car was originally meant to have runflat tyres fitted.
It went to court, he argued like God knows what but still lost.

The moral of the story?  If you are 100% honest and upfront with everything, you've got no cause to worry.

My insurance went up by £5 when I told them about my optional-extra Skydome.  Their justification is, and rightly so, the car is A; worth more, B; technically more of a risk for damage, C; if I were to have an accident they would need to replace it with another car of the same spec.

Granted point C is a mute point as you can't order them any longer, but you get the idea

I'm only jesting. I agree with you, the insurance companies would probably do anything not to pay out.

I've read everyone's replies but this one stood out the most to me... You had to declare your skydome?!

I also have a skydome on my car and I came to the conclusion that all essential/insurance altering details would have been attached to my registration number when input it into confused for my quote?

If not then I have certainly not declared my skydome or any other optional extras either such as upgraded sound system, 17" wheels, Red brake callipers, Full leather interior etc, there are no options for this on confused as they are manufacture fitted and not modifications, so how would anyone know that they need to be declared, if they do?

    Thanks, Olly.

Drilling holes in your airbox will also void your warranty  :thumb:

Only in the case where there was an engine fault. Say if your interior trim was hanging off after not being damaged but due to a faulty clip for example, the BMC panel filter wouldn't effect this part of the warranty.

My BMC panel filter was fitted by the fiat/Alfa-romeo garage where I bought the car from in the first place and they told me it would not effect my remaining warranty.

This is just my experience, so don't take my word for it.  :thumb:

So what are you saying exactly? , drilling holes WILL void your warranty should you have engine problems (I didn't realise I had to be so specific) why would you want to risk it for a bit of noise ?

Sorry I kind of mixed and matched a reply now I've read it back to myself, think I thought I was quoting something else too... That was a bit of a reply to you and to someone else I think, who knows... oops. .

I'd agree, I wouldn't go drilling holes in my air box during my remaining warranty, I don't think however the BMC panel filter would effect it as some people believe it would.

I think that the air box drilling mod would be great for the noise that people want to achieve, but at least wait until your warranty is over unless you're prepared/rich enough to have a bill that will suck more than fresh air out of your wallet.

In conclusion yeah, you're right about the warranty being void if you drill holes in the box, and to anyone considering doing it/changing filters always be prepared for them to turn around and kick you when it comes to a repair.

With regards to sky dome. mine was fitted at the factory so this is manufacturer fitted and will be on the spec sheet when built. so i believe this is not a modification.Without sounding silly my red mirrors and side stripes were fitted at the factory too. Insurance companies must have access to all things the car came from the factory with.

Thanks Nick, I'd imagine they do or they wouldn't know what's been modified and what hasn't, which would be somewhat annoying for insurance companies I can imagine.
