Title: 6th gear issues?
Post by: aaron14 on August 06, 2014, 03:13:03 pm
Everytime I put the car into 6th it seems to bobble and move a bit when driving. Seems like it wants to jump out of 6th but never actually does. Anyone have anything similar to this?

Ive not had this personally but I know other owners have. Get the dealer to look at it asap just in case it damages the gearbox.

It's the Vauxhall m32 box the bearing on the end shaft is not up to the job and wears therefore the main shaft moves.. Hence the 6th gear thing. Had it on my 220bhp vaux Meriva vxr. Guy who repaired it said he gets 2-3 vectra taxis A WEEK in with the same problem. If it's still under warrantee get it booked in ASAP. If it does fail you'll wear away the end gearbox main plate and all yr oil will fall out followed by lots of ball bearings. Or get it repaired by a specialist and it'll cost around 400 notes. Some will replace all bearings, some will just do the end one.
Google m32 6speed gearbox. Sorry

All Punto EVO cars (165, Supersport & Scorpione) use the G635 gearbox and not the M32.

The G635 suffers from bearing failure just as much, in fact more, than the M32 - but it is a different box.

If Abarth had decided to stick with the M32 then they would have done a better job because it's far more reliable :thumbd:

Has anybody successfully swapped the gearbox on an Abarth punto for something decent? The Ferrari tribute models have the same engine but with a paddle box. It wouldn't be a cheap option but I do wonder if it would fit in a Punto.

Ahhhh I stand corrected. Fair play. Thought it was the m32 still. Either way, why cant manufacturers make gearboxes reliable anymore. !!! I had a 1977 mk2 escort with 2oo+ BHP Zetec in and never once did it fail a flywheel, clutch or gearbox.
Bet the alfa 4c and cloverleaf guilietta box is up to the job

Cars booked in next week so we shall see what they say  :thumb: hopefully I don't get a normal 500 as a courtesy car. They do however have 2 super sport evos sitting on the forecourt  ;)

So my dealer just called me back and said the engineer that was sent out said he could find nothing wrong with it when he took it a quick drive. Yet the technicians who work there said they could see it wobble. But as the engineer that was sent out said no they aren't being paid to take out the gearbox and look or replace anything. What fantastic service that is. What's the point in warranty even?
