Car Problems

First time posting because this morning when starting my APE it was louder and higher pitched than usual, then it started to smell of burning plastic. When I checked the engine there was a little bit of smoke coming from the back but don't know exactly where. Also the warning light for a battery/alternator failure came on and there was no power steering either.  Just wondering if anyone has had similar problems before taking to the garage.

    Sounds like a failed alternator ,you have no PAS as the control for PAS registers low battery voltage and switches off the PAS to save battery power for the rest off the vehicle electrics.

    Also check alternator belt and tensioner,had a tensioner idler sieze on a punto which caused the belt to slip and run hot causing smoke.
