Stretchy handbrake
« on: May 14, 2013, 07:28:05 pm »
Anyone had problems with their handbrake?  I parked at the supermarket earlier and as I was walking away I noticed the my car was moving slightly.  I then drove over to my mate's house just now, parked up, went to walk to the front door and noticed my car was driving itself down the street!  :o

I've only done 900 miles but I have to yank the handbrake lever a fair bit higher than I had to before.

Ha!  Honestly I've been good, just the amount of stretch on the handbrake with seemingly such little use is a tad excessive IMO.

On the subject of driving 'vigorously', is there any way of turning off the hazard warning lights from flashing when I apply a little extra force on the brakes?  It's really irritating.

It's a common problem with cars with rear disc brakes. As they cool after use they contract slightly and hence the pads aren't gripping the discs as hard. I just leave mine in gear.

That's a good idea.  I haven't driven the car much in the wet either, and it had been bucketing down on Tuesday, so I guess the discs would have been wet.  They were creaking a lot too in traffic.

I think it's definitely something with the rear brakes yes.  But I'll try leaving it in gear from now on  :thumb:

I noticed when I used mine more the handbrake got better (more grabby and wouldn't slip on hills). Admitively mine did have 4k when I bought it but possibly could have gone like that because it hadn't been used alot but it's alot better now than when I originaly bought it.
