So far my experiences with these engines in terms of fuel economy is quite disappointing (that as a diplomatic term...)

As soon as one exceeds 3.5k rpm that thing just starts drinking fuel...
Not that I cry about it, but other cars with higher performance do use less.

Extreme was one of my trips to Oulton Park (where I only used the Abarth once):
200 miles drive there, cruising around Oulton Park circuit, a few miles driving around and return of 200 miles. Average result a staggering 16.1 mpg.

Other cars I regularly track use less, whilst being significantly faster.

What are these high performance cars that use less?

The list is extensive. The fuel economy of the 500 driven anything other than like a granny is woeful. I've never owned a thirstier car.

Still, I just fill him up, enjoy him and don't think about it otherwise it would upset me.  :thumb:

My boss's Lotus Exige S?  He does the same trip to work as I do driving in pretty much the same way and still returns high 30's where I'm lucky to get 34.

The best performing and economical petrol car I've owned so far was my 1988 Honda CRX..  It still had 161bhp (at the ripe old age of 21), it returned high 40's on a run and was a real hoot to drive :thumb:

The CRX was a different kind of car for a different time though.  If you threw half as many electronic gizmo's into it the story would probably be the same :thumbd:

The list could be huge, as already mentioned by SJ.
A couple that will easily outperform the Abarths in speed and fuel efficiency (own experience, definitely not in granny mode, all similar driving pattern)

    Honda S2000
    BMW Z4M
Porsche 911 (that only being the old 964s)

Can't be bothered to list the rest, as that list will be enormous!

    hi

i've tried something hoing to work and back today.

going i drive around 70mph with cruise on most of the time and got 38mpg or so it said. Home motorway was dead so did the driving miss daisey speed 65mph cruise 95% of the way and got 45mpg. slower yes well we all know that will help but cruise manages the turbo better than the right foot it seems lol... boring though

i find the right foot gives better results than the on/off nature of the cruise control, could be just a difference between AGP and EVO :thumb:

I find the same. Cruise control in the AGP is dire. It seems to work the turbo a lot harder to maintain a steady speed. To the Lake District and back I averaged 48.5mpg with the right foot, including a short journey on a cold engine whilst I was there. Probably averaged somewhere around 60mph altogether.

With cruise control on I imagine that would be less than 40mpg. :thumbd:

I managed 46mpg on the 220 mile trip to Devon a few weeks back.

On a run the AGP and EVO both seem to be really quite good, things change when you hit anything other than Motorways

No I find the same, right foot is superior, cruise works well if its mostly flat then it's parsimonious but over hills or at high speed its not much cop.

Not seen 45 out of my Evo for a while unless its on the inst gauge, though it's quite close at the mo with 44.3 over 160 miles but it'll never last, it never does, too many ditherers to blast past, once the foot is down I find it's too heavy to lift :D

Carmen showed a nice 38.9mpg on the trip when I reset it this evening :)

I always take it with a pinch of salt though as no matter what that reading suggests I never get more than 290 miles to a tank :o

I've only done 500 miles in mine but I'm getting 30-31mpg. To be honest I only got 34mpg out of my old Mito (120bhp) so I'm happy enough with that.

Oh and I didn't buy this car for it's efficiency  :thumb:

290 to a tank?! I went to the Lake District and back (200 miles each way) on a full-ish tank. Only brimmed it to 1-click! ;D
