Title: Poorly ape :(
Post by: garyskisplym on July 27, 2011, 11:20:51 pm
My ape is poorly so back to the dealers, list of problems-

Drivers seat bolster collapsed
Gear knob has stupid amount of wear
And now the most concerning thing is the car is hesitating to start, the exgast and blow off is really loud and how ever I drive it I'm getting a return of 18-20 mpg. I took car out of sport early to see if that made a difference but no. As much as I love the sound at the min I can't afford £25 every 2 days to just get to work and back.
Last few problems are trim at top of bonnet broken and side badges pealing.

Taking car to dealer tomorrow hopefully so may have some answers then

That's not good, I thought the general consensus was that the APE's were built better than the AGP's?

Hope vospers don't fix it or there really is a serious problem, remember quinny I've moved to kent :)

Oh dear god you'll be at the mercy of Lipscombs then ::)

Make sure you collect it before closing and check it thoroughly before you leave the forecourt!

APE = A Pile of Excrement!  Build quality wise.

I have had multiple things drop off. My washer hose under the bonnet is too short and pops off all the time, the trim on my drivers side door  has come away (window/ mirror control panel, Some of the rubber fell off on one window so I had to sick it back on. Considering it's a facelift model you think they would have build quality locked down.

At least the ape gearbox and airbags havn't died like my agp.
Title: Re: Poorly ape :(
Post by: sandys on July 28, 2011, 01:21:07 pm
Pretty happy with mine, my main issue was the gearbox notchiness and selection issues but its gone, none of the issues above effect me, fingers crossed.

I would expect seat issues as I don't expect they have been designed for some one like me whose clothes have more X's than the local porno store  ;D but so far so good.

Not had a single issue with rattles or squeaks either, all feels and sounds solid. APE gets  :thumb: :thumb: :thumb: (how many is enough) from me.

I hope it continues, really growing on me, I've not even scoured Autotrader for its replacement which is quite unusual for me, lunchtime AT is was my hobby :) Now its figuring out how I can get Esseesse before the time limit without the missus noticing a dip in the house fund  ;D ::)

On the contrary, mine has been great, not one rattle or creak. Now with 10k miles, just had a little piece of the side decal replaced.
I think you do get good ones and bad ones from the same model range.
Good luck with it Gareth dont get to down hearted. :thumb:

Quick q to all ape owners out their-

How many miles do you get out of £25 fuel???

All depends on what the litre costs

You can see the mileage I have for the tanks I have logged here

http://www.fuelly.com/car/abarth/punto%20evo/2011

There are two Evos on the site, the other guy must do mainly city driving as he gets a lot less than me, My running average if I discount track miles is about 38mpg or 8.4 miles per litre.

with a litre @ 1.41 that's approx 149 miles to 25 quid.
Title: Re: Poorly ape :(
Post by: Patrick on July 28, 2011, 06:07:02 pm
At just over 4000 miles I am getting 37 mpg on largely short distance demanding (hills!) driving, BUT not much better than that on a run.  Could be the foot gets heavier on the open road...
Title: Re: Poorly ape :(
Post by: garyskisplym on July 28, 2011, 06:24:48 pm
Yes I have a heavy right foot but alway have and not that heavy to get 18 mpg drove it light today and then was only 21
Title: Re: Poorly ape :(
Post by: sandys on July 28, 2011, 06:36:43 pm
What did the garage say?

For reference my lowest tank I recorded was 19.2mpg that was approx 80-90 miles on track and probably 35-45 miles in rush hour traffic to the petrol station after all the laps.

So I'd say something is up, have you put it back to stock?

I'd be lucky if I got 70miles from £25 that only about 18litres

You must get more than that mine does about 240 miles to 54 quid. The dash usually shows around 28-30. What little driving i do is mostly short town runs.
Build quality wise i can't fault it.

I get between 280 and 300 to a tank in my AGP SS, that's a mix of all kinds of roads in moderate traffic and a bipolar right foot...

As the Evo is suppose to better on fuel Id hope you'd get more than that..

As you have mentioned air noise I still think you should have a look for a hole, other suspects are dodgy lambda sensor for poor economy, I'd seriously get it looked at because if you are horrendously overfuelling it will lead to more expensive problems due to bore wash etc.

How is its performance generallly?

You have to get it sorted out pronto. I am not going to wait another two weeks.

Its sad that build quality issues get to this point! I really do think even Fiat/Abarth look slightly down on the Puntos mainly as the 500 is such a good seller, you'd think they'd put an extra effort into the Punto's and really try and push their sales up in that market.

As the Evo is much better looking than say the new shape Focus or Astra if that is really what the Punto's main rivals are these days

Strange You're putting the Punto in the wrong grouping, its rivals are Corsa, Clio, Fiesta etc, not the next segment.
Title: Re: Poorly ape :(
Post by: FWD_Boy on August 02, 2011, 08:34:57 pm
See thats the thing its funny how the the segments get all muddled up.

When I see a Punto it always seems more Focus/Astra than Fiesta/Corsa which I would have said that the 500 is up against but either way its a shame that Fiat didnt seem to put as much attention to quality into the Punto as the 500 but then again I havent really spent that much time in either of the Punto's to be fair

Title: Re: Poorly ape :(
Post by: sandys on August 02, 2011, 09:35:26 pm
The Punto and Corsa D are the same car chassis wise, strange that you would think it was otherwise, I suppose pricewise there is a lot of overlap between segments.

Punto seems like a quality product to me (Evo anyway) don't see where it is a lesser quality product than the 500

They don't work that way I'm afraid :(

They'll look at it quickly on the first day, decide what they'll replace and what they won't and then wait till the last day for parts to arrive.. If you're really lucky they won't have done everything and will have to re-book it a few weeks later!

My AGP has so far had a new turbo and ECU, thats taken pretty much 5 months to get...

Now they need to look at it again, I've requested Abarth to swap the all the sensors and the boost pipes next....

as well as 'normal fixes that its booked into have

issue of door rattles (again...)
sky dome rattles,
back seats rattle (again...),
side skirts coming away from the bodywork (again!) replaced once already,
Offside rear window rubber has started to split (again) replaced once already,
front window air vent 'strip' in the dash has started to lift (again, been replaced 3 times already),
Brakes squealing - Abarth UK have spoke to Abarth Italy, awaiting a fix in the next 2-3 months!
Glovebox has to be slammed to get it to close - fixed once already...

oh I do love my Abarth :-(... can't wait to get rid now.... Letters have been written to reject the car, I just need to post them now.

I seriously just couldn't recommend anyone to go near a fiat/Abarth if they ever asked.

seeing peeps with so many issues with their APE's is seriously making me doubt getting one ... i would be interested in the ratio of peeps with probs to peeps with none .... i have had brand new cars with probs in the past ... renaults ... and as I will be using my car for business purposes, can't afford to have it in fiat being fixed more often than not ... even if I do have a courtesy car in the meantime ... the point, for me, of getting a new car, is to have trouble free motoring for a few years :/

I've done 3000 in mine, problems so far are an occasional buzz/vibration from rear offside, 2 peeling decal sections, and me noticing the bodykit os a pretty bad fit - is anyone elses not great? i.e. where the bumper meets wing area of the front wheel arch, the curve of the arch doesn't line up properly.

In the door shut the sticker near the door catch says "1.4 T-Jet", does every Abarth say that? I thought it would say "1.4 multiair"!

It also has some hesitation when cold on light throttle, slightly better in sport mode but still annoying.

Apart from these... I love it!!

The Evo is an excellent drive as long as you avoid the 'Normal' setting.  No idea about the AGP SS as I haven't driven one.  It's almost as much fun as my Alfa 75 V6, but in a different way.  I have no idea about its behaviour on the track, and I don't really intend finding out.  It is as quick as my previous Audis (2.0T engines like the Golf GTI) but does occasionally get bogged down with low rev turbo lag, like my Punto GTs in the 1990s.  It is a relaxed cruiser, and is the tasteful side of cool, so that I haven't yet found anyone who dislikes it, from the drongos on the street to the most conservative of my parishioners.  It does seem to take a long time to loosen up, and I don't expect to have the best of it for a few thousand miles yet (I'm at nearly 5000).  It gives me mid-30s to the gallon irrespective of whether in the town or on a run.

Oh, and it's well put together...

Good appraisal of the EVO patrick. Mine has been bullet proof in just over 11k and has stayed rattle free. With regard to the engine still feeling tight, i would say
10k is when i really started to notice a difference. I am running a TMC box on mine this chops out any lag you may get and with around 200bhp of power, its quick ;D.
Cant make my mind up to change the suspension or not, like Patrick says its a nice relaxed cruiser and soaks up the bumps, so i dont want to make it to stiff. I took an EVO SS out for a quick spin the other week, i was impressed with the Koni,s so that may be an option.
Would i buy another one, absolutely, just hope Abarth dont bring out the new EVO to soon. ;D

Cars been dropped of this morning and have the nice panda again for till Friday.

Also need headunit replaced as volume button sunk into hu and one of the lugs on my engine cover snapped so hopefully they will replace that two

I hope everything gets sorted the first time!

On the plus side, at least you got a little Panda to use - they refuse to give me a car when mine goes in as their insurance won't cover anyone under 25 - apparently!!

Carmen has got to go back in again, which I am dreadding! Have a list of 5 or 6 things that need to be done before she's two in September..

3rd time she back to one problem and 2nd for the others.

I still disagree that I have to pay £15 a day to have the replacement car.

Speak to Abarth UK matie and kick up a fuss.. if nothing else they may cover the cost.

They certainly did with me when I needed to do 300 odd mines in a courtesy car...

oh, and when everything is sorted ask for some compensation vouchers ;)

Getting somewhere now.

Had the intermitted fault again today with the box so want start to dealer and the head tec took car straight out. So they have now seen the problem with 4th and also the problem with 2nd popping out ive not had in ages (forgot about it really and learn to live with it) desided to do it while tech driving it. Booked in next week to have the box out.

The loud blow off, down on power and weird sounding exhaust I have put down to dodge fuel as haven't used that shell station in while and not had the problem.

Also all the small problem I have been promised will be sorted while in for the box

Slowly getting the car sorted all the list is covered under warranty bar one thing.

Not going to go into details due to complicated reasons but looks like I'm not going to be driving it for a very long time.

One thread, one car does not sum up the lot, mine is very good indeed and it certainly gets a very hard work out, plenty of other owners happy if you read the posts.

My EVO is also excellent, nearly 17k in mine and not a single problem.
The EVO is an improved AGP and has the multiair engine much better than the T jet.
You will here good and bad on every car model.
Looks are personal, i loved it the first time i saw it.
Would i buy another, absolutely.

I bought an ape back in feb 2011 the first 3 days I had it I started having problems after the 15th time it had been back I started to send a few letters round to Abarth and the garage I bought it from,
I got so fed up with it I threatened them with legal action but 10 days in to my written complaint and a solicitors letter I had a brand new 11 plate APE identical to the previous one but this one is not a lot better I'm still at the dealers moaning about it at least once a month but I love the car so much I can't bring myself to get rid of even though it's at the petrol station more than it is on the road because it's a thirsty mother!!!!!!!!

n

No didnt have an AGP but i drove Lloyds AGP  a couple of times, and Lloyd has driven my EVO, i think Lloyd will admit there is a difference in the two cars. We also have a A500 with the T jet engine, so have a good comparison from that.
Mine is not SS but i have TMC, BMC filter and a set off 18" SS wheels, skydome & climate.
Not knocking the AGP in anyway, i like it, i nearly bought the last Unregistered one.

there,s good and bad ones of each, the bad uns get a bit more press because thats the way of the world.

if you've any warranty left i'd give the AGP a last chance, its a great car.

if it continues to frustrate you then call it a day. you might find another one that works

i have, standard and SS. its impressive, feels more solid and refined. can't get on with the interior though, otherwise i'd probably have one. luckily my AGP SS is a good un, i.ll be keeping it for a while yet :thumb:

My EVO has what i call the DIY SS kit. EVO already has the larger Garret turbo, so i just need just need koni's to complete. :D
I have driven the EVO SS, it didnt feel as quick as mine , but it had only done 250 miles so no real comparison, Koni's felt good though.
