Windscreen Wiper Fluid Reservoir
« on: November 19, 2014, 11:39:33 am »
I was just checking under the bonnet this morning and I had a quick look at the windscreen wiper fluid reservoir.
Now it is not that easy to see how much fluid there is in the reservoir because it is obscured by the surrounding engine parts. I took the filler cap off and the vertical filler tube which supplies the reservoir appears to be empty - the little gauze filter half way down is visible. I checked the handbook and it is rather vague about the subject.  ???

Any ideas how I can gauge how much is in there and how far it should be topped up?

Top it up until you see fluid :thumb:

Only way of finding out if you run out is when it goes all foamy and you lose pressure ;)

Should it be above the gauze filter?

It doesn't really matter if it comes up over the filter when you top it up. It will soon go down when you use the screen washers a few times ! Screen wash isn't like brake fluid or engine coolant. There's no minimum or maximum levels which you must adhere to. Just make sure you've got some in there. Incidentally, I use cheap High Street screen wash which I decant into an old pop bottle and mix with water at something like 30% wash for summer use, and 50% for winter. It helps if you use a plastic funnel when you fill up to avoid spillage. When it starts foaming out the top of the filler spout you'll know there's enough in !

Thanks Austin, I have ordered some Tutela SC35 to be delivered to my workplace so I will be filling up soon.  :thumb:

Just for the record, l ended up putting in over 1.5 litres so it was pretty much empty. Seems to work fine now. :thumb:
