Anything that is about 1000cc or less. Dare I say Corsa, load about and plenty of second hand parts avalable?
3rd party fire and theft cover could be considered as the fully comp premium might be more than the car is worth.

Why not something older on a classic car policy?

Classic car policies have age restrictions, normally over 25, the person that is not the car.

I've never understood why insurance forces inexperienced drivers out in woefully underpowered cars.  Sure, we don't want 17 year olds in Imprezas, but I remember dicing with death in various mates 950cc Fiestas trying to get the thing up to something approaching dual carriageway speeds before ending up under a truck.   Braking and grip is also compromised.

Personally I reckon young people should be given cars that are competent, but utterly dull to discourage recklessness.   A ten year old Toyota Avensis or Hyundai Accent should be about right.   Insurers take note...

Well I can't see her going to college on a tractor but the bus will be her main form of transport and legs too. I will have to start searching on eBay for a bargain

You can get a Corsa C for a low price now. Some are nicer than others but if you think a 53 plate is coming up to nearly 9 years old now, they are fairly cheap.

something not small and with a bigger engine ....

im 19 and costs me £1800 comp on the abarth it costs £1800 comp on my 1.6 saxo vtr worth £9000 less than my car now and down by 55bhp

they are bumping up the price on small engined low powered cars wheres the bigger cars are not been touched because no one goes for them as every one assumes they cost the earth to insure

ohh and the abarth costs less to insure than the evo sporting ;)
