I dont get why everyone wants to use an ipod/iphone. Just get a usb drive its so much easier and god forbid but if your car get broken into i would rather a usb stick goes rather than an ipod.

speaking of whole music collections, a salesman of ours (not abarth!) decided to press file transfer on his phone when plugged into the blue and me on a demo bravo.

it appears hes lost his music collection and didnt have a backup.......

as far as im aware there is no storage facility on blue and me system (eg hard drive, ram etc). any ideas how to get his music back?

Yes. If he hasn't tried to write to the phone storage since the 'mistake' and the phone implements some form of media card where the music was stored, a restore utility will likely be able to recover his files. When deleting files from a file structure, they are not actually deleted, the first character of the filename is changed and a link to that file is removed from the File Allocation Table (too much to explain here), thus enabling the file to be overwritten.

There are some freely available file restore utilities on the Internet. Alternatively snail mail me the media card and I'll sort for you (for a discount on the A500 of course ;D - Just joshing).

ill let him him know, thanks!

a bit off topic but a question thats relevant, does it depend on how you overwrite the files as to how easy they are to restore?

i use a programme on my pc that deletes files and it says it uses the gutmann principle which takes 35 passes at deleting the file, is this well and truly deleted then or still retrievable?

This is a bit of a can of worms. There are quite a few delete algorithms out there, indeed certain ones are designed specifically for government use and I believe involve at least 100 overwrite passes! In general, these algorithms should do the job.

However bizarrely it sounds though, the only true way to absolutely guarantee that files cannot be recovered is to physically trash the hard disc (belting it with a lump hammer should do the trick insuring you smash the platters). It's amazing what can be recovered nowadays. Some companies can be delivered a fire damaged drive that won't even spin up and recover all/most data by removing the platters to another hard drive case!

I use that too Chunky -- good for wiping internet tracks and browsing stuff *cough*   :thumb: It's nigh on impossible to get stuff back, unless you have some very specialist tools (the ones the Spooks  8) have)
