FIAT Abarth 124 Rally Sport - suspension question
« on: February 10, 2022, 12:30:08 am »
Hi,  I’m new to the forum and excited about finding some Abarth experts.  Looking for some specifics about the FIAT 124 Abarth Rally Sport model.  I’m restoring a ‘77 model as a tribute and was thinking about upgrading to an Independent Rear Suspension, as in the original.  But except for some pics & short descriptions in various Abarth books,  I haven’t been able to find which FIAT or car was used to supply the IRS?

I was thinking about possibly using the IRS from a NA or NB Miata, as the dimensions are pretty close, but realize it would take a lot of fabrication.  Any help would be greatly appreciated
Thanks TonyB aka yoloboing

    Welcome to Abarthisti TonyB

The 'original' 1972-1974 Fiat Abarth 124 Rally was the homologated road version allowing Fiat to use the competition version to go rallying.

As such the oe Abarth 124 parts were only available in very limited quantity.

These were bespoke parts that were not used on other models.

Both front and rear suspension were heavily modified especially the rear, as you say with IRS and LSD.

I think the chance of getting oe parts are extremely rare so fitting say MX5 parts would be easily available.

Great project with a lot of chassis fabrication. :thumb:

Thank you for the details, I guess I’ll continue down the Miata IRS path.

Much appreciate the offer of assistance.  I’ll try to post some pics to show progress.  I recently found a pinninfarina hardtop I’m restoring and a set of cromodora CD30s wheels with Abarth logo.  Quite happy about the find. Thanks TonyB

Excellent find, did you get the catches and rear clamps with the top?

They were all rusted out so will need new ones.  Found a couple vendors, Vicks & Mr Fiat, that have repros.  Re-originals also has most of rubber seals too

I’m also going to look at a 97 Miata rear sub-frame & suspension later this week.  If it’s in decent shape, might have starting point for IRS conversion… stay tuned
