Has anyone else had a 128 Abarth?
« on: October 15, 2009, 09:51:43 pm »
It was my first brandnew car.  When I hit the brakes I flew forward, as it had servo brakes at the time and I had to unlearn to hit the brakes with all my leg power :)  It was a brilliant experience, set me up for Abarth cars.  And it saved my life once, when I overtook a friend, arrogantly checked the rear view mirror waving to him and did not realise that a 2CV was just about 20 m away on the other lane, on which I was.  Pulling the car violently back onto the proper lane after overtaking, I lost control, it just swerved from side to side, I could not control it, so I closed my eyes and took my foot off the gas.  Within a couple seconds it went straight and steady.  Just passing a graveyard on the side of the road.  I missed the trees, the 2CV and my friend told me later that he had seen the most unbelievable recovery on the road ahead.  Ooops.  Given that cars were simple at the time, my dad and I worked on it a lot, which was a useful experience.  I'll try to scan a pic and upload, it really was a lovely car.  I was grumpy for months after I had to sell it because it became too old.

Sorry, but Abarth never made a 128.
I'd be interested in seeing a picture though.

Well it was a special tuned 128 with wider tyres, Abarth exhaust, Abarth steering wheel and some more little gimmicks and it was called 128 Abarth.  Mind you, I bought it in Germany, so I don't know if it ever sold in England.  Was a really cool car to drive, though.  And it was different enough for the German police to stop me and tell me all the modifications had not been registered and I was driving an illegal car.  At wich point I laughed a lot, told them to do their homework and asked if I can go.  Still relishing that one.

As far as I know Abarth didn't touch the 128 as Filipinetti was chosen to prepare them.
Here's my old car, Abarth arches, steering wheel and brakes - but not an Abarth.

I am working on a pic, my dad working on the 128 Abarth.  That's really what it was called, in Germany.  And this dad of mine taught me about cars.  He still does, luckily, even though he is 750 miles away.  :) :) :)  I am sooo lucky.

Great looking car - I was very tempted when it was for sale on PistonHeads.  DO you know what happened to it?

yep, a lovely fellow called Matt bought it, in fact he was the only one who bothered to drive it and he loved it.
He's now sprinting it down south.
