My Abarth Martini Racing Ritmo 100S convertible
« on: September 02, 2009, 03:55:17 pm »
Gentlemen:

About 3 months ago, I found the car pictured in the link below in the paddock at the Kent, Washington (US) historic races, and purchased it.  I wasn't sure exactly what it was, but the price was OK.   I contacted Martini Racing, and they told me it was one of 10 cars built by Abarth for them as promotional vehicles, and the only one that they know of that still exists.

The specs they gave me were 1585cc twin cam with 60 overbore by Abarth, 10:1 compression, and 10mm lift cams; all different than what a 100S is supposed to have.   The car is painted white with the Martini red and blue stripes down the sides.  I do not have the original Italian papers, but the car went to Germany, and the TUV paers show the owners as Cromodora wheels/Fiat Germany??!!   The car then came to Washington, US, about 7-8 years ago.   The serial number does not jive with what I have lsited for Ritmos; 138AS000, 138AS001, or 138AS002.

The serial number is ZBB138ASO*07017502*; in the middle it being AS and the LETTER O before the "star", and NOT the number zero???!!

Interesting.  Not a look I've seen before.

    Pics added, btw.

The car is rather quick and very stable, but a real truck at slow speeds (under 15mph).

It doesn't want to idle down really well, and the jetting is too rich.  I haven't had a chance to play with that as yet.   It runs a tiny bit hot, but fortunately it has a thermostatically activated electric fan with an overide manual switch so you can keep it on if you wish at all times.  I also haven't checked the plugs, and it may need one step hotter ones.

It seems a lot quicker than many of the 1600cc or 2 liter Alfas I have owned.   I took it out at Portland (Oregon, US) International Raceway, and had the speedometer pegged at 200kph (126mph)..I have no idea how fast I was really going.

I used to race an ex-factory Mini Cooper 970 some 30+ years ago, so I have no problem with cornering with the inside rear wheel half a foot off the ground  :)

1st through 4th are fairly close together, and 5th is an overdrive, so you need to go down to 4th to climb steep hills.   The controls (such as the clutch pedal and steering) are rather stiff, especially compared with something like my daily driver 2009 Hyundai Accent.

Yes, it's a Bertone badge on the rear, and just below the bottom edge of the top, it is a Martini sticker that looks like it's been on the car since new.  The Martini Racing stripe on the top of the dash also looks like it's been there many years...it covers a crack on the dash top that I will have fixed.  There is a similar crack on the top of the dash, above the steering wheel.

What I find strange is that on Series 2 cars, there appears to be an indentation in the middle of the grille that the Fiat badge sticks into...on this car there is no indentation??!!

The Martini stripes and the Abarth badges look to be as old as the car.   Only the Martini stripe covering a crack on the top of the dash looks to be fairly new.

Your car has a series 3 Strada grille on it which came out in 1985. Every Bertone convertible that I have ever seen has had a Bertone badge in place of the Fiat badge on the grille, much like the one that you have on the boot.

The front Abarth shield badge which you have has the scorpian and "Abarth & C" script that were used pre Fiat takeover in 1971.

The front Recaro seats, steering wheel and steering wheel badge are out of a series 2 Abarth 130TC.

The wheels are off of a Lancia Beta. I might be wrong, but I do not believe these were ever fitted to a Strada.

I think that your car is a bit of a bast**d! Maybe not done recently, but certainly messed about with and probably modified say 15-20 years ago.

just found a press picture of a cabrio, confirms the bertone badge on the front grille and no fiat sloping bar emblem, thinking about it, doesnt make sense to have fiat emblem on front and bertone on back
the cabrio badge on the front occupies the space of the fiat badge on the standard front grille, on the strada abarth the scorpion was at the side of this badge, reckon this is a standard strada front grille

same period x1/9s had bertone badges front and back and no fiat badge

I'm also pretty sure that there was a Bianca special edition series 3 Strada that had a white grille, (most were black). Maybe the grille came from one of them and had the small Fiat badge replaced by the original cars cabrio badge?
