Different exhaust + BMC air filter + remap
« on: November 06, 2008, 07:38:04 pm »
Hi folks,

I was thinkig of getting an aftermarket exhaust system for my AGP. Main reason is the exhaust sound which is just too discrete for my likings. It produces a sweet low tone bass (a bit quiet though) but all the  joy disappears when you rev the engine higher. Wider pipes and different silencer will probably do the trick but I would love to gain some power too, so I was thinking of replacing the whole system. I allready contacted Supersprint and they answered me that the system will be ready in the beginning of 2009. I am however very pleased with how the G-tech silencer roars:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4TOtXEtkjg0 (takeoff)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UjIl2GKeNVs&feature=related (idle)

My main consern is that I don't know how much can actually be gained from a different, more optimised manifold and perhaps a more permeable cat-section? I was told that the standard Abarth exhaust is allready pretty good and I fear I might just spend money in vain. What do you guys think?

Also, I'll be replacing the filter panel with the one made by BMC - I'll do a remap after, just to optimise it. Would changing the complete exhaust system also demand a remap? If so, I will of course wait untill I gather all the parts needed.

Now, some of you are probably thinking how come I just dont do a remap for power gains and put on the rear silencer I like - well, to be honest, I just fear I might stress the engine a bit to much  (use it daily). Unfortunately, I don't know much about remaps - what happens with it? Does the turbo boost increase or is that just whole system gets optimised to the point where it performs the best? I'd love to keep my Abarth as reliable as possible but wouldn't mind getting more power out of it.

Any advice or information regarding this will be appreaciated!

Thanx a lot!

I have had a few remaps in the past, most being on my beloved smart roadster,
One thing I can say with having dyno results to prove it is that they are all different! I had 5 different maps on the car and one cost me a new turbo, another sent the car into safe mode all the time, another made me feel like I was getting kicked in the back every time I put my foot down...... Different maps suit different driving styles, in the end I had a custom map done by red dot racing which was perfect for me. HP isnt everything!, the roadster was running at various bhp with the top end being124hp. Red dot smoothed the power delivery out, steadied the turbo to give better power delivery and settled the car at 114bhp.  (I did have aftermarket exhaust, oil cooler, induction, cams, suspension, brakes (defo needed those!) thats my input on remaps anyway!

probably not to everyones taste! P.s sold now but im still proud of it! (took me 2 years!)

Thanx maccy - I appreaciate it!

I know power doesn't mean much if its only available in short bursts or on peaks of revs, but I would like some more power as much as I would like the car to perform the best it can. Of course, first thing that comes in my mind is optimisation - and I will of course make sure someone that knows his job will deal with that.  Btw, love what you've done with your "smartster", doesnt look overdone, just right - and some awsome power too - how much was the boost increased?

Mapping shouldnt affect the reliability of car if you take it to a reputable place. I got my Tjet mapped by red dot aswell so i would reccomend giving them a ring up and asking them what gain can be got. If you are going to be replacing exhaust ect then get that done before the remap as they can be incorporated into the map then to get the best performance out of it :)

dont forget if you remap it though you may end up running into warranty problems!

Id honestly go somewhere that can show you dyno results (like red dot) the remap I had that kept sending the car into safe mode was done by a very well known remapping company and when I got to see its dyno printouts at on a rolling road about 6 months later the car was a mess. The turbo boost looked like an irratic heart beat!!
the smart boosted up to 1.8bar if I remember correctly. Thanks for above comment, It became a show car, never won anything! although it did make it into the smart factory's quarterly magazine! (how sad is that, I did the smart factory tour in hambach, france. Was like toy town!!)

If you are looking for a new exhaust system Gazzella Racing list a Ragazzon system including de-cat pipes and a couple of different styles of back box. They are imported direct from Italy and are good quality, I had one of their stainless steel silencers fitted to my Panda 100hp, which helped to improve performance and the exhaust note.
Former AGP, 500 and APE owner. Miss them all.

My Ragazzon exhaust (back box) arrived yesterday from Gazzella. It looks like a quality product but unfortunately it won't be fitted for a couple of weeks so I'll report on it then.

Although it's advertised as being part of the complete 60mm pipe system, it comes with a shim to fit to the standard diameter pipe.

    Hi all!

I have a gtech exhaust (central piper + rear silencer) and it's GREAT!

I took this video at a Abarth "rally", it's not my car (that is black) but it sounds the same.

As you can hear, the sound is AWSOME!! Not induction noise at all, but it roars with a lot of bass noise (it remembers a  Delta, or an Impreza) and it pops and "bangs" a lot (you can hear from the movie). I'm really happy about it.

I also have a BMC filter (but it's not fitted right now, I'm waiting for the new FB555) and i fitted for a month the GTECH ECU.

Concerning only the exhaust: power is more linear and the GPA is more powerful on highrevs (you can keep pushing 500rpms more than the stock exhaust). Maybe you got a little more turbo lag at lower rpms, bu I'm not so sure.

Abouth the GTECH Ecu (190bhp with ecu and exhaust): wow, it was a beast: the GPA could skid in third gear and it was like an old turbo car. I was pushed back to the seat every time the turbo started taking air to the cylinders. I sold it beacuse I had many requests (i sold it almost at the same price i bought it) and because I'm not so sporty: i drive calm almost all the time, and it was TOO powerful for what i needed. The good was that in every gear I was pushed to the seat, event in sixth gear! The second gear looked like a first gear...

    PS: sorry for my english!
