I know removing the dump valve completely gives you the chatter sound :)

Then you'd have your turbo boost just p*ss away into the air and have no power, the dump valve lets the pressure build, without it the turbo wont build the boost and you'll basically just be driving a normal 1.4 without the turbo :P

As far as I'm aware with my limited turbo knowledge anyways

Dump valves do not let the pressure build. They allow excess pressure to be relieved when you lift off the power (I.e when you change gear), because when the inlet valves close the pressure has nowhere to go. The dump valve is a release for that pressure. This reduces stress on the turbo, plus in theory reduces the time it takes to spin back up because it hasn't been stalled. So you don't need a dump valve at all. However, if you did remove it you would have to plug the hole (which might have been what you meant)... But that would be fairly pointless.

My dump valves spring recently gave in, and I lost my turbos power... If you didnt need a dumpvalve then when the spring was permanently open like mine was then nothing would have changed power-wise... The air just p*ssed out from the turbo and boost was lost completely... So pretty sure the dump valve was needed because when the new one was fitted the power came back

Exactly the same problem I had, new DV solved it immediated

Thats the problem all air / Preasure was lost hissing out... Take dumpvalve out and plug pipe and it should work fine...  :thumb: but will back flow to turbo and slow it down so spin up will be longer and also will proberbly wear turbo out over a long period.  :thumb:

I see I see, he'd said that and I dont think I understood it then, but yeah if the air is pushed back through the turbo thats probably worse than it p*ssing out to the air, cus the air would force its way against the blades inside the turbo and likely blow it up pretty quickly, and there'd be a drop in boost from the air slowing the blades down thats going back in, all for it to sound cool, not worth it long term but maybe just for a try

Could also just plug the dump valve itself, instead of removing it completely, I guess that would have the same effect

Yes, except if you look at the development of turbos/dump valves etc over the years: first there was just a turbo, then people added dump valves to help stop the blades from stalling, then they realized they could recirculate that dumped air to keep the turbo spinning a bit whilst it was off the power. So I'm pretty sure most mods people do that remove the recirculating air (whilst they may sound cool) are actually a step backwards.... Just my opinion of course.

The recirc bit is more understandable in a car with a larger turbo, where the air that gets recirced is of a higher boost, and more of it, so more goes back through, but in a car with a turbo as small as the ones we have, I think the power loss in dumping to atmosphere is extremely minimal, I see the recirc more as a thing manufacturers started using on modern cars to get rid of the noise, you know what they're like with sound and safety etc, aswell as the image a dump valve blow off gives, chavvy and all that, but I do agree that removing the dump valve seems a big step back, as its there to improve the turbos performance

Recirc on factory DV's is purely down to sound & emissions (think there's a specific regulation for it). There won't be any noticable power loss/gain either way assuming the DV isn't leaking and can deal with the amount of boost built up. Spool rate in regards to recirc / VTA is neglible; but a correctly setup DV can vent the perfect amount of air whilst tweaking how much back pressure remains in the intercooler (or so I read), which can have a tiny effect on lag & throttle response. Couldn't tell you how true that is though

Either way, if spool rate really matters... Anti-lag! ;D

Unfortunately illegal (but I'm sure you know that)... Even the WRC cars have to turn it off between stages.

I think my concern would lie with the lifespan of the turbo rather than legalities... Would get expensive very quickly haha. :P

Why not set up a 2-step system with your anti lag and buy a new turbo every few hundred miles
