Standard Abarth GP remap - just how much can it take?
« on: March 20, 2009, 05:17:33 pm »
Hey folks,

I'm just about to schedule my Abarth for some tuning (custom exhaust & remap) at Abarth dealer. The result should have to be around 190 hp...Now, what I want to know is if theres anything in the standard Abarth Gp that will suffer from that gain - any component I should take into consideration of changeing? Hows with the engine block and turbine (remains stock)?

Im leaving the work to be done by Abarth dealer himself (they're also a part of Ferrari-Maseratti network there), with a lot of testing, proving (leaving the car for 14 days) so I feel confident about the work quality - I'm even getting the warranty and everything will be homologated. However, I wouldn't like to cause too much stress to the car since I intend to keep it for some time. So, am I pushing it?

Any hints, advices?

Although not into tuning myself instant thought will be the turbo. 160bhp for the 500SS no turbo change 180bhp for the GPSS with, it has been frequently quoted that Abarth don't feel the standard turbo is long term reliable beyond the 500SS's limits.

    Just a thought

iv gone for the cheaper, bigger intercooler option rather than forking out a fortune for a bigger turbo.

Is the 500 using the same IHI turbo as the GP? So 190 HP out of it without changeing anything else (mind you though, approx. 10HP will probably bring the exhaust itself) would be considered risky?

Id heard that anything above 170 on the IHI turbo was considered 'risky'!

Im going for a 165 Remap and then hoping to add another 5 or so with the exhaust.  Also going to uprate the wastegate.

    Abarth 500

    G-tech 'S' chip.

    G-tech full exhaust sytem.

    172bhp & 285Nm @4850rpm.

    Now sold - doh!

I have got a Forge Intercooler on my Exige S, it is a top quality product I am sure that yours will be the same for the Abarth. :)

The standard abarth turbo is safe upto 180bhp. Going further than that and you are putting it at risk.

I'm looking somewhere near that. The rest will bring the exhaust and air filter...
