2nd USB socket on G.P.
« on: January 08, 2009, 11:02:36 am »
Just a quick word for any G.P. owners. When putting a usb stick into the glove box of your G.P. please be aware that there are actually 2 sockets in the glove box. There is one on the left hand side which is inline with the usb sticker on the lid and is the one to use.
There is another one on the right hand side of the glove box which should be covered by a plastic cover. The covers are prone to falling off and thus exposing this socket. This is not a media port and is only used by the service department for diagnostics.
Whist we are not aware of any problems when plugging a stick into this port, it will definately not allow you to play music or use eco drive.

Just want to say that on my previous 07 plate GP and my 58 plate AGP i have used the USB socket under the black plastic cover with no problems at all. On my previous GP i even loaded the SMS reader on using this socket. All my music plays flawlessly from a 4GB data stick with no folder or ID tag errors. I also have a friend with an 08 plate GP who also use this USB socket to play his music. Not sure why you have been told that it will definately not play music ?!  :-\

I'm suprised about that chris. I've had more than one person complain that blue+me was not working properly and as soon as we swopped the stick to the correct port it was fine.
Chunky will probably put me right on this put I think the second one is called the "compliance port".
Its not supposed to be used hence why it has the cover over it.

When i recieved my first GP from the dealer the cover was not actually over that USB socket in the glovebox and because the left hand one looks recessed and surrounded by metal/mechanical bits if that makes sense i assumed that it was the diagnostics slot. Therefore i used the right hand one because of the smooth plastic surround and my previous GP had the Windows sticker next to this socket. When i recieved my AGP the cover was fitted covering the right hand socket but i promptly popped it off and used this socket as i had encountered perfect compatibility with this socket and my data stick on my previous GP. And after 6 weeks of having the AGP i have not come across one problem yet...  :thumb:

i was told the covered port is a programming port, for language updates and the like, dont think there is a proper name for it.

never really looked into it any more than that, the guy up at technical mentioned something about people using the wrong port caused a few compatability issues but thats about it.

i use it for doing language/software updates etc, maybe the early software version only configured the remote port to work with music etc, and now the later software enables either to be used? there are 5 or 6 different versions of software to my knowledge.

surely its easier to use the remote port though, then you can still shut the glovebox with the usb pen in?

from what ive seen the bravo and 500 doesnt have this port.

Mines a S2 with the new style keyfob and lane changing function. Luckily my Sandisk USB stick is quite small and therefore the glovebox can still be shut easily with it plugged in. Might start using the left hand socket though if that seems to be the recommended one ?
