Chattering/squeaking when idling from cold
« on: October 27, 2009, 10:49:51 am »
Hardly a life-threatening issue, but does anyone else's GPA make a chattering/squeaking noise when idling from cold?

It's like a squeak from a pulley bearing, and normally disappears when you blip the throttle.  Can't hear it from inside that much.

Had it on older cars before caused by dry belts, but it's a bit embarrassing on a fairly new car when sitting in traffic.

Anyone else?

yep, i,ve got this, i,d describe it as a chirruppy sort of squeek, comes on  at start up and disappears after 2 minutes at the most.

can.t demonstrate it to the garage without leaving car over night so haven,t bothered mentioning it to them

An old car of mine used to do that, do you what i used to do to fix it? (prepare yourself for a laugh) I used to open the bonnet and whilst the engine was running, spray a fine mist of WD-40 towards the fan belt as it went round. After a few gentle sprays, the squeak would stop. But i don't think it's a good idea as it could cause the belt to slip.

It might do but as I pull away I wouldn't be able to hear it over all the rattles and squeeks from the interior trim

What i do to couteract this issue, is have the radio on, almost always.  I really cant be bothered to drive the 120 mile round trip to see a man, who tells me there isn't a lot he can do about a rattle in my dash which i cant really pin point. I cant see the abarth tech is going to want to dismantle my whole dash in a hope of finding something vibrating slightly.

Sounds a little like my loose spark plug problem (I thought it was a pulley or similar) but the whistle started/continued when the throttle was blipped and the engine was warm - so maybe not. Worth checking that they are OK though.

Delany's car launched a loose plug into the engine bay at 1.8 bar. :'(

Wouldn't that be 1.8 bar plus compression figure?  :o

There is now a modification out for this problem, it consists of a new belt being fitted and a water drain to deflect water from filling your alternator and freezing. Might be in for a wait to have it solved as many dealers will be requesting belts and modification kits.

The MiTo i have at the mo with the same 155 HP engine and 6 speed box as the GPA also has an embarrassing chattering squeak too, doesn't seem to go either but can only hear it at low revs at low speed. It also has the screechy brakes too, but I'm not bothered because it's not mine!  :D (possible topic merge? As i double posted in both )

Took this video this morning, after a 30 minute drive to work.

I think that its the belt which is making the noise.

That's exactly it.  It's not the timing belt, it's just the auxiliary drive belt, and matthew9712 reports there seems to be a fix for it.

I've merged this with an earlier thread since we seem to have a few on the go about this topic now.
