GPA Squeaking Brakes

A few of us have been ona bout squeaky brakes...on the wrong topics! So i;ve created this post to continue the discussion.

Jet - You tried giving it a thrashing and see if the brakes still squeak?
I find that if you keep the heat in the pads they don't make noise. Difficult if you have passengers though  ;)

It was suggested on the forum that copper grease applied to the pads would temporarily cure the problem. The tech at Autoworld said it wouldn't (twice) but after 4500 miles I was getting p1ssed off with the squealing in traffic and had some applied when my wheels were replaced. Well, after 2 weeks they're still squeak free.

On all my cars and motorbikes copper slip has always cured the problem  ???

surely though its only worked for a limited time?

am i correct in saying its something to do with the shim with the abarth brake problem? or is that just the mjets/Tjets?

if it is, is there any news on a revised shim for the UK cars?

well if it does work perminatly thats great news - id rather only take the 1 trip to the garage for the copper slip than a second one for a revised shim fitted so long as it was perminant  :thumb:

On my bikes it would always be fine for the life of the brake pad (about 6k) and the car would be a little longer. My dad was a mechanic years ago and he has always put copper slip pn the back of the brake pads. The copper slip can start to wash away espically if you use a jet wash anywhere near the pads.
As i think someone else has said on here that brake dust build up causes the noise, you could always try blasting the dust out and see if it happens or it takes some time to start happening again

yeah, i deglazed the discs and flattened the pads too, copper slipped them and havent heard any more complaints.

until we get an abarth in that needs a set of pads were not gonna know if they come with shims or not, solme have and some havent from the factory.

I didn't say it is perminant, it depends on usage and the dust build up.
Ah Chunky, its about time you turned up in a technical thread :thumb:
