Knocking Sound !!!
« on: April 26, 2015, 09:42:14 pm »
Hi guys, been a while since i last posted!!

My Abarth has developed a Knocking sound when idling (not all the time), but this sound disappears when the clutch is pushed down. I presume its the clutch bearing on its way out? anyone had this problem or could help?
Could low gearbox oil cause this? anyone know how to check gearbox oil?

Any help will be much appreciated

What's the noise like under load? Is it causing any problems with shifting or drivability?

Could be a release bearing, but I think that's more of a whine / rattle than a knock... Not sure! Hate trying to diagnose things as you can lead people up the wrong path, replace loads of stuff and still end up not curing the noise. :thumbd:

I don't hear a noise under load, i just get a rattle/knocking sound when the car is idling (Clutch up). Once you push the clutch down the sound stops. No problems shifting gears and no odd sounds when doing so.

I am defiantly going to change gearbox oil as this has not been done (almost on 50k now)
Another assumption is the fork engaging arm (not sure on the technical word) could be slightly slack causing the rattle.

I've just had my gearbox oil changed (41K) and it has made a difference to the shift but my engine still sounds like a bag of spanners at tickover.

With me it is the timing "chain" - at tickover it is noisy but once there is a slight bit of power on it quietens out.  Like James I hate trying to diagnose - I've been wrong before.  But at 50K you certainly need new gearbox oil  ;)   It can't make it worse!

Right defiantly ordering some Gearbox Oil. Do you guys know what oil to use and what it's capacity?

I just find this rattle sound strange and how it only occurs on idle with the clutch up :(???

Maybe you should take a look at your timing belt and tensioner???
