uneven wear on front tyres
« on: February 17, 2010, 12:59:21 pm »
On my recent 1st year service it was discovered that the tread on the inner edges of my front P Zero Neros was worn down to about 3 millimetres and consequently both tyres would need replacing shorly. I had done 12,000 miles and the tread on the outer edge was about 5 millimetres. The dealer recommended that I get the tracking checked. Have just had 2 new tyres fitted at my local tyre dealer in Stafford, they've checked the tracking and they say it's spot on ! So why the uneven wear ?

Did you check the pressure if the pressure is too high in the tyres this could have caused the uneven wear with more wear towards the middle.

I was told exactly the same at my first service and that I should get the tracking checked.

Maybe the cars set up with a touch of negative camber on the front, this is the case on the Panda 100hp so could very well be the same.

This sounds all too familiar my last two Alfa's have suffered the same problem, both wearing pzero's both on 19's

My current Spider only lasted 4000 miles before needing new tyres which was unacceptable so i had a long battle with Alfa UK and then Alfa Italy who both said that this was normal wear and tear after many phone calls (at my expense) they agreed to pay for two new front tyres but would not admit there was a fault and they would not agree to have the tracking adjusted to +0 toe in (they are set up toe out)  :banghead:
so i said that if the next set only lasted 4000 miles i would be asking them to replace them again :) luckily this set has lasted 12000 mls which i think is reasonable for a soft compound, heavy car on 19's.

Id suggest that anyone who doesnt drive their car like they stole it and wants to prolong their front tyre life to get the tracking set at +0 toe out (or parallel) at  a good tyre place, If you do find the handling compromised you can always get it returned to factory settings  :thumb:

Noticed I was talking about the wrong Abarth! I suppose the point still stands.

Reckon our tyres take a hammering on UK roads though, no wonder they do not last many miles.

PZNs seem to disintergrate, never got more than 7.5k out of the 19's on the Alfa amazed to have got to 8k in the 500 with some tread left to go. Fingers crossed for 9.

I think that this type of tyre wear is just due to a bit of negative camber and hard cornering. Nothing to worry about really.

It's hard to find a car that does wear tyres evenly. My first set lasted 3k, second set lasted 7k (Toyos) the back ones lasted 12k now i've just had x4 new P Zero Neros fitted and the tracking done so time will tell how they wear and how long they will last! I know the 500 is a different car, but at least the tyres are the same. BTW, the PZN's are VERY noisy don't you think?

My Pzero's are very noisey when cold once they warm up they do tend to be a lot quieter  :thumb:
