What are your favourite and worst bits of the GPA?
« on: October 21, 2008, 12:18:07 pm »
My fave bits:-

    Retro cloth seats
    Red stripes
    Wheels
    Brakes - brilliant!

My least fave bits:-

    The lifeless steering
That my stereo keeps turning itself back on!

The engine not up there in the faves? I had an Alfa Mito as a hire car in Italy last week, it was the 1.4T and I was very very impressed. So tempted to take a Punto test drive so see what the GPA is like.

That bit kinda went without saying!  The sheer degree of initial acceleration they've managed to squeeze out of a 1.4 still surprises me every time so far.

I think its more impressive the way it goes from 60-90 in 6th gear  ;D

    Best bits

Leather seats - I just don't like the inserts in the standard seats. I'm good at upsetting people.
    steering wheel
brakes - apart from the squeal. I must do something about that.
blue & me - except when that damn woman won't do as she's told.
white paint - until you compare it to the metallic white on the new Mazda 2. That's amazing and makes 1949 white look grey.
    engine, handling, looks
    it's not common.

    Less good bits
the clock is useless, why can't it be displayed on the ice readout?
    Pirelli noise
can of deicer won't fit in the door pockets.
handbook doesn't fit in the glovebox. I was told by the dealer that Fiat doesn't recommend you keeping it in the glove box.
rather have a space saver than the inflator

How many miles has yours done now? The brakes on our first demo squeeked up till 1000 miles, and then stopped. I've also heard the same from a customer.

    Hi

    Just over 2k.

I was talking to the service manager from Platts down at the Gaydon Italian day and he told me the same thing about the squeal stopping after 1k.

I took the car back to the dealer. They fitted dampers (?) to the rear calipers, apparently a mod for GPs and said they couldn't get themj to squeal.

It happens after the brakes have warmed up a bit and then in slow-moving traffic i.e. when you just want to touch the brakes lightly. Really loud squeal. Sure draws attention though.

It's not a problem when you want to brake properly, just annoying in the kind of traffic I encounter on the way in to work. And of course by the time I get to that traffic, the brakes have warmed up nicely.

Oh, and I'm loving having a reverse gear collar, too.  Haven't had one of those for years...

Sun visors are getting on my nerves, though - you can have them at 90 degrees to the windscreen, or flat against it, but nothing in between.  ::)

    Good bits:

    Styling
Build quality is much, much improved over my 10 year old Sporting
    Love those wheels...
Standard level of equipment very good
    Alcantara-esque seats
    Sports boost
Price - I actually think it is quite keenly priced when compared against the Fiat GP range

    Bad bits:
Blue and me voice activation doesn't like my accent!
No Apple music format support - come on Fiat! - even Ford have this now and it's the same Microsoft system
    Glovebox
Typical italian espresso sized cup holders
Abarth Grande Punto Esseesse - white with red mirrors and stripes

    Fave bits:

    Price of the standard car
    Styling
    Seats
    Throttle response when in Sport
Peddle heights.  Nice for heal and toe
Brakes - the one thing that really exceeded my expectations
Stereo - actually the second thing that exceeds my expectations
Blue & Me - bollox, that's three things now

    Worst bits:

Steering feel and responsiveness - especially bad in Sport
Handling - especially when the rear steps out when encountering a bump mid corner
Suspension set up - jiggly and not very planted
Cheap build quality and finish on some bits (hardly any paint on the passenger door inside, front bumper parts seem to be made from the same quality plastic bacon comes in)

I'm so hoping the Esseesse kit solves the steering / handling.  If it does, and gives a bit more umph, it will be one cracking car.  8)

    -

    - steering too light with Sport mode OFF
    - steering too artificial with Sport mode ON
    - lack of places to just drop your stuff
    - no light in the glovebox
    - indicator switch demanding a firm push
    - noise and rattle from behind when driving over bumps (couldn't yet find where exactly)
    - first three gears too short (lots of wheelspin on slippery roads, while overtaking ...)
    - unconfident ride for first few miles (the car just rolls a bit too much for my liking and when encountering sharp alternating curves you can just feel the cars bodyweight. Luckily, the tire do their job great!)
    - squeeky brakes when driving slowly (cold?)

    +

Well, everything else. The car is just awsome, I love it!

Don't worry John, to me, it's by far the best car I've ever driven so far...

After doing 100 miles or so, I would say that my favorite bits are:-

    The looks
Performance, (not given it 100% in mine yet, but gave the demo which had 2,000 miles on it a good drive back to my work yesterday).
    Brakes

    The worst bits:-

The steering. I think that Gofra has it spot on. I might get used to this though and I am comparing it to older cars that will always have better steering feel.
    The joke sun visors
    Lack of storage spaces
Hazard lights coming on when braking hard, (probably a good idea, but annoying).

    Unsure:-

The seats don't feel as big as some similar Recaro high back seats that I have had in the past. I'm only 12-13st and 6ft, but they feel made for someone who is 5ft 6". They seem comfortable enough, hold you in place and they look great, I'll just have to see how I get on with them on a long journey.
