Title: What would you change if given the chance?
Post by: John501 on November 05, 2008, 01:49:36 pm
Ok, I'm probably leaving myself open to a torrent of abuse here, but if there was somrthing you could change about G.P. Abarth what would it be?
I'm thinking along the lines of colour choice, options etc, not "I'd buy it if it was £6000!!".
If we can get some sensible comment, I may even suggest some of them next time I have a chat with Abarth.

Ooh, good thread.  I assume you want to skip mechanical stuff like improved steering feedback (please!), but here's some for now:

Factory built esseesse for £16,000.  ;D

Definitely more colours.

Giallo Ginestra (Broom Yellow), French blue, dark purple, Lambo orange (not the brown that Fiat call orange) and a decent red colour (rosso corsa, rosso scuderia).

Make the kit wheels an option rather than those graphite ones.

Fit a decent clock.

Sat nav docking option like the new Seat Ibiza.

Glovebox that holds more than one glove.

I have wondered about the Xenon headlights, had some on a Bravo sporting and they were great, not cheap mind at £700.
Sat nav docking may well happen, its just been introduced on 500, so may be rolled out later.
Keep em coming!!!

French blue, Pearl white and yellow would be good colours.
The option of having the bodykit colour coded. I think some colours would look better with this and some would look better left as standard.
Racing spec Recaro seats.
Improved steering.

I approached our body shop about the possibility of having the kit colour coded, they were concerned about the grain of the plastic causing bonding issues. It was also working out far too expensive because they would have to remove the whole kit before spraying and then re-fit, so labour times were very high.

Its not a Maestro  :o ;D, but seriously, I would like to have an analogue boost gauge like 500.

I think heated front screen would be a good option, also getting rid of the sport button and a get the alfa DNA system instead (is that what its called and has the 500 abarth got this)

Oh a better red, a nice gun metal and maybe a blue...
Title: Re: What would you change if given the chance?

Heated front screen is a Ford patented/licensed device, so not likely to happen, unfortunately.

And leave my Sport button alone!  ;D

Ok leave the sport button as it is..... ;D

Didn't know that about the screen how come other manufacturers have them, must pay a massive fee to ford.

How about a diesel abarth then???? only joking

The Ford Patent has now expired on the heated front screen, and they are not renewing it. So as the new KA and Fiat 500 share a factory, it may be more possible than you think.

That would be a great option, doesnt the gpa with climate control come with a front screen extra boost heater thing? Does it workor is it just like sticking your fan and heater on full?
Title: Re: What would you change if given the chance?
Post by: John501 on November 05, 2008, 03:50:41 pm
The screen clear button just turns on the air-con, puts the temp to max and directs every thing to the screen. Clever though, it doesn't turn the fans up until the car starts to warm up, so you're not just blowing cold air at the screen.

As a dealer what do you think would add something to the GPA to help you shift them (not that you need any help)??????

Okay, so I'm very biased on this one, but there is nothing wrong with velocity red. I've just had a look out my office window and it looks great.  ;D

Domc,
Thats really why I started the thread in the first place, We dont have trouble shifting them, but its a real "bums on seats exercise". Once someone drives it, they want it.
But in the cold light of day, it would be nice to know what might make people buy a different brand. The perfect example is the heated front screen, I know people that would not buy another car without it! (We are also Ford dealers).
It is a case in this country, that the general population do not know what Abarth is, so are not considering for their next car. With a bit of re-education, it may well be on the list.
Fiat have done a good job of re-education after the Stilo had rubbished Fiats image, people are now turning to Grande Punto as a real alternative to Fiesta/Corsa but these things take time.
Title: Re: What would you change if given the chance?
Post by: domc on November 05, 2008, 04:35:25 pm
You must find it frustrating that you dont get bum's on seats, there is very little advertising for the GPA not even a link on FIats site like the 500 has.

Title: Re: What would you change if given the chance?

GPA will come into its own when 500 lands. Lots of people fancy owning a 500 Abarth, but for most it may be just a lttle small for everyday use.
At that point you can get the performance you want with the extra space in a G.P.

~ Replace the electric steering with hydraulic with a direct feel for what the front wheels are doing
~ Thicker steering wheel, especially round 1/4 to 3
~ Adjustable steering column to eliminate the typical Italian short leg long arm set up
~ Drop seat height closer to the floor
~ S2000 bodykit (mainly the front bumber area) to come as part of the SS upgrade
~ Get rid of the front foglights
~ Ability to run negative camber
~ Loose a lot of weight (1 tonne dry wieght should be ok)
~ Lower the car on decent 1 way adjustable coil overs
~ 200bhp with low torque and poppy mapping.  No sport button
~ Cackling SS exhaust but not some chavvy monstrosity (simple and discrete)
~ Chassis bracing to stiffen it up
~ Glove box that's not rubbish
~ Dump the door pockets and weighty plastic trim and replace with nets and light weight alcantara covered
~ Make the seats adjustable so that they don't have to go back to exactly the same position after pulling forward for access to the back
~ Dump the cup holders
~ Sun visors that are adjustable through all angles
~ Don't have the same colours available to normal Puntos
~ Remove the badges on the sides (how many badges does it take before someone realises it's an Abarth) and also will stop pikey gits damaging the car attempting to prise them off
~ Boot opening button, on the boot
~ Replace the silver fake (and really bad fake) carbon fibre instrument surround
~ Optional black 18in wheels
~ Improved cooling to engine bay, especially to turbo and exhaust manifold area
~ Wider track (not just by a tiny 6mm)

Only a few things then  ;D

However, still the best looking car in the competition but unfortunately not the best to drive.

All you'd need to add to your list is four wheel drive and you've just specced yourself an S2000.  Hope you've got €500k handy...

Mods I'd do:

- stiffen the suspension just a tad
- equip it with G-tech exhaust (back) and possibly a Supersprint manifold (supposably they will be ready in the beginning of '09)
- BMC panel air filter + custom CAI although the original intake system seems to be be done properly good...
- put on a nice set of light 18" (if I get a hold of nice black ones with silver/white border) Would be great if stock wheels were available in 18" - they look gorgeous...
- G-tech module box (remap box delivering 25 HP)

All doable and I'll probably realise most of it eventually :)

Change the wiper stalks to up/down instead of twist.
Sunglasses holder instead of driver grab handle (Renault did get something right John  ;))
Headlamp washers. With/without Xenon.
Another 20bhp would be nice, but I would prefer another 50lb ft of torque. A nice fat mid-range.
Replace the fake carbon. However not the god-awful painted effort in the Alfa MiTo. That makes the Abarth look like a quality job. Same goes for the MiTo steering wheel and the MiTo lights.

Have to admit it's not different enough in performance /handling terms from the normal GP that I thought an Abarth would be.

I wasn't looking for a totally hardcore car (Abarth Exige indeed ::) ) but more like the difference between the old 106 and the 106 Ralley (or Clio and 172 Cup).  I can live with the current performance (in Sport Boost) but the steering feel and handling are no where near for what is being billed as a hottish hatch.  From the description of the Assetto? kit, it doesn't seem to be able to do much to improve the handling (stiffer springs and new wheels aren't going to do a huge amount).

As for other bits, others have mentioned the same things.
Glovebox - don't tell me no-one thinks that could be improved
Seats - it's a pain having to put them back to the original place once you've opened for access to the rear.  You either crush the rear passengers legs or in my case have to put the seat forward first before fitting the baby seat in the back.  Not a major deal breaker, but an annoyance which didn't need to be there.
Visors - not just me that thinks it a bit of a design error (thought they would have change it from the same issues in the Mk1 Punto)
Driving position - I can't be the only person that finds the short leg / long arm set up a bit awkward.  Bring the wheel a little closer would allow me to sit far enough back to be totally comfortable with the peddles (though I'm glad it's not the same ankle breaker peddle position as the Mk1 Punto)
Weight - the scurge of lots of modern cars.  Hurts performance, handling, stopping, economy etc.  Surely it could have been made much closer to the 1 ton mark, it's a small car for Gods sake
Electric power steering - for me this is the worst bit about the car.

So yes, I probably am a moaning old git as the majority of the car is really really  good.  I just was hoping for real chuckability and feel like a hot hatch should have.  Not an S2000 4wd rally monster, but an Italian cool looking 172 Clio Cup rival.

Old Boy, I just cant get my head around what you mean about not being enough of a difference between G.p. and Abarth! Whilst I am lucky enough to drive an Abarth every day, when I have to drive my wifes 130mj sporting, there is no comparison between the two cars.
I was always a fan of my wifes car, and chipping it to 155bhp made a huge difference to the drive, but now it just feels too light and roles too much in tight bends.
Although there are always going to people out there that say "It's just a Fiat with different badges !", it really insn't
Title: Re: What would you change if given the chance?
Post by: magicmole on November 09, 2008, 06:04:04 pm
Perhaps the Italian ice-cream seller was my father after all because the driving position suits me perfectly.

I've already moaned about the twist sticks for the indicators but today I needed to get the wipers on high speed in a hurry when someone drove through a flooded part of the road and covered the car. I couldn't see a thing and instead of being able to flick the stalk downwards I had to twist the damn thing. It took far too long as my instict is still to bang the stalk not twist it. I dare say I'll get used to it in time. Surely if there are going to be safety regulations the standardisation of basic controls should be one of them.

Another moan was the noise from the Pirellis. 90 odd mph up the M1 today so we wore earplugs to cut down the racket. But they don't half grip in the wet. And no sign of aquaplaning either (on the way home, not 90mph on the M1). That said I've asked for some quotes for OZ wheels with Toyo Proxes T1-Rs.

I find T1Rs have too soft side walls and need a few hundred miles to scrub in.  R888s on the other hand  8)

exactly why I changed my mind.
I was going to the dealership to ask something about my 500 abarth order when I came accross the GPA, liked it more, so that was that.

I have to say that I disagree with you Old Boy. I drive a GP Sporting to work and back everyday (60miles) and spend alot of time in it. I really respect the car for what it does and for the money I paid I reckon it's one of the best purchases I've ever made. It's a good car!

When I tested the Abarth however it was without doubt in a different league not only performance/handling wise but the general refinement and quality feel has somehow been significantly improved.

BTW....Just to add the thing I would change. Fiat/Abarth should of given the GPA an alarm of some sort. It then wouldn't have the massive insurance groups of 15/17.

Is this part of a plot to ease noise pollution in Italian cities? We should be told.

The only additions I can think of are oil level and oil temp guages, just to make it easier to keep an eye on things.

I quite agree with magicmole.
A modern instrument system should tell you what is NOT working, not what IS working normally. I prefer something minimal that pops up a message of some sort to tell me when things are about to go wrong, such as low oil pressure or higher than normal temp.
