Options question...
« on: November 02, 2008, 09:14:08 am »

I was going through some AGP options and prices at Research Coventy yesterday. With the Skydome sunroof is it worth getting the climate control or is it over doing things a bit. Also thinking that all these options, including leather seats, is going to add a load of weight to the car? Maybe it's better to keep things simple :-\

I doubt if climate would add much weight over the standard air con. IMO the standard seats are pretty tacky and the leather is worth it. I doubt whether there is any meaningful extra weight by choosing leather.

I don't know what kind of weight penalty you will have with the Skydome or whether there will be a significant amount of body flex with it fitted. I like the dark interior without the Skydome and I've insisted on having sunroofs in my last few cars. Just personal preference there.

Basically just go with what you are happy with.

I have two trains of thought with the Abarth. 1) Standard car with these options and 2) Esseesse kit with no other options.

I've gone for all of these options and I think they make the car into a bit of a junior GT. The leather seats look ace, the skydome gives you a degree of open air motoring and the climate control means that you don't have to play around with the temperature as often as standard air con during a journey. Overall, it means that you get a car that should be a nice place to cover decent mileage in. I pick mine up on Monday, so I'll find out if this is the case pretty soon.

I think that the argument for / against these options are:-

    1) Alcantara feels nicer to touch and sit in, (but not all of the seat is alcantara) / Leather is longer lasting, so long as you look after it. I've had Alcantara in the past and it does tend to wear out on snug fitting sports seats.

    2) Skydome looks good and gives you options, but it is one more thing to go wrong - electrics and leaks. I guess it also adds more weight and means that the body won't be as rigid - something to bear in mind if you want an esseesse for hardcore use.

    3) Climate control gives you better control, but should be standard in this day and age. I work in HVAC and no-one would spec an air con system without temperature control and all split systems come with it as standard. Climate also makes the dash look nicer, but if you don't care about these things don't bother with it.

    Hope this helps.

Very useful  thanks! Can you not upgrade to an Esse Esse if you have a skydome?

Sky dome wil not have any effect on rigidity, you have to remember that this system has been around for a while, and is used more or less across the range of Fiats. It also has no effect on the 5 star crash rating of the G.P.
As far as leaking and reliablility, I have been selling Fiats with skydome since early 2006 and i have not had one come back with a problem.
You can still have an Esse Esse kit with skydome.

Like the other guys said it's all personal preference. Climte control isn't much money and looks far better then standard. Although i dont like A/C and low temeperature climate control as it gives me a cold  :D So i just went for the sky dome to add enjoyment to the summer months. Along with making it a hotter looking car imo.

Like OPC said. I thought the same. EsseEsse with no extras or Standard with extras. I went for the extras. I'm happy with my choice.

    - I think Skydome adds extra 30 kgs - bear in mind we're talking about weight put on on the highest point of car. Not sure tho, how much of an impact it has on cars driveability...And yes, it does look terrific!
    - automatic climate control = definitely way to go! Looks way better if not anything else...
    - leather seats = perhaps more durable but they demand more attention. After few tousands of km I allready noticed signs of use on the "bum-part" of the seat. Looks like the leather coating could be tightened a bit more. And perhaps the most significant difference - car's interior sounds much more "hermetic" due to sound absorbtion (or at least seems so to me)...
