I haven't got a clue and anyway unless you tested both variations under identical conditions (which I would think was impossible), I doubt you would notice a difference. It's down to personal preference. I would say though that I have noticed a real difference between the stock Pirelli PZN tyres and the replacement Goodyear F1 Assymetric tyres both in terms of grip and noise.

What makes you think the 17 inch wheels will make the car faster?

    Diameter for 215/45/17 - 625.3 mm
    215/40/18 - 629.2 mm

    so only a 3.9 mm (0.62%) difference

The 18 wheels are lighter than the 17 so less unsprung weight.

Basically I don't think you notice any difference, I don't.  :D  Apart from the 18s transmitting more harshness through due to lower profile tyres.

They tend to be more sensitive, especially on poor roads. ;)
