Only you can decide :thumb:

Thanks guys,

Going to book for a test drive in both at BM in the next couple of weeks.

Red GPA or Black A500?

Have only seen one white A500 near me in Leyland looked mint.

Black Abarth 500's are shiny  8)

The duck chose the 500. So should you!

No, take them both for a test drive. The GPA is more practical, and probably rarer. Although you're unlikely to see either very often. They have the same engine, they're about as quick as each other in standard guise, so unless you need the space, go for the one that puts the biggest smile on your face  :thumb:

That was taken about a week after I bought it, so I'd polished it about 5 times...  :-[

Hi

Look at both, drive both, then decide.  You'll know in your heart which you want most.

For me it was the AGP, too many things about the A500 that I really hated.

Happy 'making your mind up time'

If you want a pram go to mothercare or buy a 500, if you want an Abarth get an AGP :thumb:

Totally agree,if you want style and performance, and bigger boot space then it's gotta be the agp,but the choice is yours, either way you won't be dissapointed :thumb:

Anybody going to defend the A500? It's being ganged up on here!

If pictures are worth 1000 words then check out my car pictures here (https://www.abarthforum.co.uk/members-cars/draigflag's-500/150/). That should help you make your mind up! Remember the A500 is based on the original from the 50's, the AGP is just a Punto so there is less of a racing heritage link. The A500 is quicker too and you can get red leather, very Italian :thumb:

This might be a controversial idea, but heyshunt, if you tell us what you're looking for from a car, we might be able to come up with constructive points, rather than just our usual "mine's best!"

They've each got their own character.  The GPA wins on interior space, and has better controlled suspension.  The 500 has a more cheeky exhaust note and drives a bit more like a terrier.  Despite the GPA's power advantage, real-world performance is probably very similar.  Prices aren't a million miles apart, either.

Yes and also a lot of people seem to live where there are big roads, duel carriageways, motorways etc. For these kinds of roads the GPA makes more sense with it's 6th gear for cruising and added comfort etc. Living in Wales, the roads are smaller, streets are narrow and the back roads are very twisty, so the A500 suits these roads more! The A500 would be better suited to a city too obviously.

Is being based on something from the 50's really a good selling point is 2010? and a 500's got more in common with a ford Ka that the original 500

Yes because retro things are coming back, look around you ;) And the fact that Ford are using the design too shows how popular it is.

I had the same problem A500 or GPA   ???

1,I wanted something fun/put a smile on my face.  Both cars were fun to drive but somehow i couldnt stop smiling when i sat in the 500  ;D

2,Car that was also unusual. Lots of F500's and Punto's round here but ive yet to see either in Abarth form near me.  8)

3,Would be actually worth something in 3yrs time. The A500 has a lower list price but retains more value over 3yrs  :thumb:

4,More practical than my Spider. The punto wins hands down here ...but im coming from a 2 seater with a small boot so even the A500 has more space than what im used too  :-\

5,I want to personalise my car. The wider choice of colours and options made the A500 more appealing  ;)

6,Esseesse. If i choose to SS my car its a lot cheaper with the A500  :)

These were the reasons i chose the A500 and im sure its way many more A500 are sold than GPA (so if you want the rarer car choose GPA) but everyone is different so at the end of the day its you who has to live with car , so only you can make that final decision :)

Hope this helps

Basically you are doing the right thing - test drive both of them. Try to get a decent length of test drive and take them both through town, on A roads, country lanes and a motorway if this is possible (I managed it out of Research in Nuneaton). I suspect you'll know once you've driven them both.

The AGP is certainly more practical if you carry adult passengers or a lot of luggage (do you go away with your car or need to pick stuff up a lot for instance). But the A500 has a quite reasonable boot if there is one or two of you.

Don't forget there is the choice of a red A500!

Sorry guys I know I always post this photo - but it's sooooooo shiny.

Paula

Hi. I walked straight past the Punto & went straight to the 500essesse. So much fun & brings smiles from other roasd users. Arnold Clark in Sprinburn have Abarths sitting & can do upgrade for £2450 to Esseesse. I Brought mine home & took friends out & he has bought one following day for his wife - but she never gets near it!!

Which ever you go for you will love. I went from a big luxury saloon & dont miss it, only regret that I had changed sooner.

All the best & enjoy your choice whichever way you go.

Agreed. Your only going to get a A500 owner tell you to go for A500 and likewise with the AGP owners...otherwise someones bought the wrong car.

Sod practicality though. I've got the other half and 2 mini me's to sqeeze in mine and I still chose the A500 because it's the one I wanted, but we're fortunate enough to have a second car. Just make sure it's the car you want!

Book a test drive and tell us what you think is best.......then the opposition whichever, it is can tell you why your wrong  :thumb:

To be honest both are great cars... I found the AGPSS more fun to drive easy to live with and it still stands out from the rest of the cars on the road... The A500 was very stylish could put it anywhere and it looked amazing and sounded amazing and was alot of fun when you got to opened it up... I was very lucky had all of them as a demo at some point... Either way both will be a great purchase... Best of luck and enjoy making your mind up...

Cheers John

Cheers Dudes,

Had a A4 but now have a grande punto at the moment so would find it hard to loose even more space.

Will be doing 70 miles a day to work and back so need a half decent motorway ride.

Will be testing them both soon so will let you know.  Warming towards the GPA with a ss exhaust  ;D.

Also are any of you guys havng any 'fiat' problems after having driven your cars for a few thousand miles?

They're both great cars. I found the GPA a lot more comfortable to drive and the chassis feels a lot more planted than the A500. Having said that, the A500 is a lot cheaper on petrol, has that exhaust note and always puts a smile on your face! If I could, I'd have them both  ;D

IF your travelling 70 miles a day on the motorway then l'd say the AGP. I do about 60 and its a good motorway car. Getting about 37 mpg on my journey  :thumb:

Have to say for long mway cruises I'd have gone AGP over 500, mainly because you get cruise  ;)

what!! the 500 doesn.t have cruise.. or a glove box

can.t believe they,ve sold any ;D
Title: Re: GPA OR A500?? Please help!
Post by: stevey293 on February 21, 2010, 10:59:26 pm
yeah and they cost more to add to insult.

So a short summary

A500 small fun to drive impractical dodgem no glove box no cruise control bit wobbly in the bends over priced.

AGP medium also fun to drive (3 points to prove it) could do with a slightly bigger boot but still far bigger than the 500's more gadgets and in my opinion the price is just right also far better looking than the 500.

Both have pros and cons but in my opinion its a bit of a no brainer get the AGP

Wait a mo - the 500 does have a glovebox.  It's sort of secret, and might just take some Abarth driving gloves (good job they're fingerless).

Correction - was a secret. Guys, you're all saying how good the AGP is, just look at the sales figures again please!

EDIT: Here they are: Jan 2010 GPA's sold = 2

The only way to make your decision easier for you is 2 test drive them both, i could say as a personel point of view 2 go for the a500 thats because i own 1 and know all about the car its easy 2 be biast, i have never drove a gpa although i think they are a wicked looking car i could not tell you how it handles, drives etc. If your willing 2 spend the money it costs 2 own 1 of these cars you need 2 be 100% sure 2 late once you`ve purchased. You would not not walk into a shoe shop and buy a pair of shoes without trying them on 1`st . Same rule applies .  :thumb:

GPA all the way for me preferably ss'd, I did try a 500 but the boot is the size off a shoe box and I did'nt like the seats and ohh less power more money.

At the end off the day it is your choice I would test drive both and see, GPA is good for long drives I've done Devon to Scotland in a day before no probs

Good luck whatever you choose

I drove both before I decided, and in the end it just came down to personal taste more than anything. Both have similar performance, but the A500 seems more 'cheeky' where the AGP is more 'racey'. And like others have said, you won't be dissappointed either way. I still smile every time I see mine parked up ;D
