More Abarth Newbies!
« on: December 11, 2008, 11:38:56 am »
Hi everyone,
We picked up our Black Abarth in October & couldn't be happier.
We have had a teething problem which we are hoping you guys
can possibly advise us on but apart from this minor hick-up
we love her!
We live in Bournemouth & have been told the nearest known Abarth
Punto is in Southampton but if anyone knows different please say  :)
Pics to follow...

    Hi Domc,

We have a problem with squeeky brakes! it's driving us mad
& is sooooooo embarrassing everytime we brake.
We have called the dealership & they were going to change
the pads over but the dealership called a few days before to
say they had spoken to Abarth & this was just because they are
Brembo's & they were advised to cure the problem we would
have to have standard fiat pads put on & of course when you buy
a car like an Abarth you wouldn't be too impressed when told that
to cure this problem they would have to put standard pads on so
we cancelled the appointment & thought we would see if it just got
better on it's own but Jet is now 2 months old with 2000 miles on
the clock & she's still squeeking everyday!
Have you got any suggestions or ideas?

It doesn't just happen when I drive her, it also happens when Malc
drives her so it's not a female driver related problem  ;D

    Hi

    Welcome to the forum.

This is a common problem, usually cured by applying copper slip to the back of the pads.

Mine are still squealing after 3500miles but it's booked in this Saturday at the dealers. I'll get the copper slip applied at the same time.

If this fails I'm ordering some Teflon-coated discs ;D

Did you buy yours from Westover Sports Cars?
We were told in October when we bought ours that
they have only sold 8 & 1 of those is living in Southampton.

No I don't have a GPA, have a GP Sporting at the moment but have a deposit down with Westover for a 500 Abarth.

Spoke to Westover the other day they said they were selling a GPA roughly every two weeks at the moment.

The correct fix that the dealer should of told you is as Magicmole says, the dealer should strip the front brakes down and add a layer of copper slip to the back of the pads. They are assembled dry in the factory and do not cause a problem on the dry Italian roads. Unfortunately we live in the U.K. and the damp causes the squeel.

Thanks for the advice but won't that make the wheels messy John?
I can understand about the dryness of italy & the lovely british weather here
& how it will cause this problem though.

Thank you for your hello's & being so helpful, we really apreciate it  ;D

They just put a thin smear of copper slip on the back of the pad so it shouldn't come off and make a mess. The noise is caused by the brake dust getting damp and clinging to the end of the pads where they move in the caliper. In a dryer climate the dust would drop out but the good old UK weather makes it stick.

Mine are squeaking too - SS kit fitted about 1000 miles ago and still driving me barmy - booked in for the 29th to get sorted.
I had the same problem with my GP Sporting 06, which was never cured - this is my worry.

Malc said the same, he really liked it once he had got used to it & he said how nice it was to drive.

He will probably get it back soon anyway as she is STILL squeeking !!! :'(
