New car, new forum
« on: June 25, 2009, 01:03:42 pm »
My real name is Chris, but through a series of events most of my friends refer to me as 'Za'. I'm a 24 year old mechanical engineer living & working in Lancaster, although most of my weekends are spent visiting my old university friends spread throughout the country.

Since last Saturday I am the proud owner of a Grande Punto Abarth in 1949 White, with the 'optional' stripe & mirror kit. I ordered a basic model, but there were none available so rather than wait 8-10 weeks for a new one to arrive they offered me a model with climate control and "SkyDome" sunroof for no extra cost, with a delivery time of only 10 days. How could I refuse?

My old car was a 2001 VW Polo 1.4 MPI, with 60(!)bhp. It was a fine little car, but I needed something a bit more fun to drive. So the 1.4 in my Punto actually delivers more than two-and-a-half times the power for the same engine size ;D

My Abarth started showing it's Fiat roots straight away though, as the 'body computer' needs replacing. At first the sun roof wouldn't work, but they managed to fix that before I left the showroom. However, their diagnostic machine tells them that the parking sensors are broken. Which is a bit odd seeing as you can't have parking sensors fitted on an abarth  ::)

Everything else seems to work okay though, and I'm loving it so far. Only read the forum on running-in on Monday, and had already driven 120 miles getting the car home, so I had been treating it nicely till now. But I opened her up on the way home and I couldn't stop smiling, can't wait to hit Woodhead Pass when I visit my friend in Sheffield.

Managed to get my phone working through the Blue&Me and checked to see how the USB connection works with a flash drive. I've ordered a 16GB flash drive though, since 2GB just doesn't cut it.

I've only had it a short while but I have already had jokes about 'A-bath' and it just being a Fiat, but none of that matters when I can just look at it and know I made the right choice  ;D

Welcome Za! The AGP is a fine fine little car you won't regret buying. The power from such a small engine is indeed amazing. We've all had little niggles like you especially with electrics and Poo&Wee(tm). Luckily though the engine in mine has been faultless and I haven't seen any posts on here to the contrary. Enjoy.

Welcome Za.  I'm another former Polo owner (n reg  1.6GL).  I found the standard suspension very soft and at the time I wasn't into modifying or changing bits on cars.  It probably would have been a great car if it had had some 'treatment'.  Anyway, it's all Abarth now.  No regrets.  Still loving my A500.
